Low 90's? I think Oil Can was smoking some HIGH grade purple-Koosh Hydro... He is full of s***.

If thats the case where's Oil Can at? I'm tryin to burn one down wit him!

It's a simplistic answer that justifies handing out a minor league contract to every has-been who has delusional fantasy of making a comeback. WHATS TEH HARM? LOLZ!?

If Oil Can Boyd was really throwing 90 mph, or was showing an resemblence of the pitcher he was back in the 80's and 90's, then there would be no harm in signing him to a deal. In fact, a major league team would have probably given him a deal. It's far more likely that this guy is cooked, and is not even worthy of being signed to a minor league deal.

I never said there wasn't any harm in giving him a minor-league contract, I said what's the harm in a 15-minute bullpen session. If he's good enough, hell give him a minor-league deal and at worst, he'll be down in Lancaster or Portland teaching the young prospects. What's wrong with that?

Waste of a roster spot.

How 'bout we bring Luis Tiant in for a bullpen session? He's 68 years old, so he has experience, he hasn't pitched in the majors in 26 years, so we know he's fresh, and if our doctors can put some nice titanium supports in to keep his arm from falling off, I don't know, that may just address the longevity concern. He'll need a team mo-ped in order to avoid getting worn out from the walk to and from the dugout, but we can afford that.

Foolproof.

I think all 3 of you a nuts then...

Really?

You are advocating the team give a contract to some washed up 49 year old. A 49 year old who was mediocre against Independent League batters. A 49 year old who didn't throw over 83 mph four years ago. A 49 year old who announced his comeback attempt in 2005, where it fell on deaf ears.

All because he might do......? What exactly? What is the appeal that I'm missing? Is there some sort of underdog story that you desperately want to see unfold? Are you that much of a sap for Disney movies?

Seriously.

I mean, f***ing seriously. This is the ultimate example of the pot calling the kettle black.

I am?? At least if you're going to try to poke holes in my argument, at least use my argument. I'm going to ignore the rest of your post because you assumed that I supported giving the dude a contract. Now I know that you're not only nuts but you jumped the gun a bit quickly as well. I never said anything about a contract. Bosox and I (correct me if I'm wrong Bosox) are saying let the dude try out for 10-15 minutes, see what the dude has, and move on with our lives.

Geez, if you're going to at least act like you're right, you should start by paying attention...that was a rookie mistake dude...

Oh, let me rephrase.

You're advocating giving 15 minutes...... (continue with the rest of my post)

I find both propositions to be equally absurd. Wasting 15 minutes of our front office's time so they can watch Oil Can Boyd pitch is equally stupid.

Ehh, no it isn't, really. Giving him a chance to try out with the team commits us to nothing and it would be very easy to simply say "you looked good, but we've got a good team right now and you don't fit in it."

The only risk involved in a 15 minute bullpen is that Boyd might do well enough that someone gets intrigued. Other than that it literally costs the team absolutely nothing and gives a valued alum a bit of recognition he seems to feel he needs.

That's exactly what I'm saying. I just don't see the harm in letting the guy throw 35 pitches. For some reason, people think I'm advocating giving Boyd a minor-league deal outright which I'm not but if he shows something, I don't see the harm in putting him down in Lancaster or Portland and him taking the spot of some 28-29 year old already there who the Sox know won't even sniff the majors. At the very least, Boyd can mentor some of these kids on the rise, let them know what it takes to make it to the majors and what kind of attitude you have to have. Put aside the fact that he's 49 years old for a second and consider that his arm is probably in better condition than Schilling's was in 2007 or even Smoltz's right now.

He's not Satchel Paige. It's a waste of time. If wants to get back into baseball that badly, he should be a pitching coach or something.

The Yankees signed Billy Crystal to a one day contract' date=' bring on Boyd and have him pitch an inning. Its only ST[/quote']

It's completely different. Crystal was a life long fan who wanted an at bat in ST, nothing wrong with that. I'm pretty sure it didn't even count as an out. Boyd actually wants a real contract and a shot in the pros.

Actually from his words what he wants right now is to throw a 15 minute bullpen session that gets taken seriously and see where ya go from there.

He said that four years ago, and no one listened.

He's done.
