I wouldn't have a problem saying Harriston is a better athlete over Ruth. To argue otherwise is dumb. David Wells' date=' CC and Fielder all had some sort of training regiment, there bodies might not indicate as much, but I bet you anything they put a lot more work into their bodies the Ruth ever even thought of. [/quote']

And Michael Phelps is a better athlete than David Ortiz. But I'll still take Ortiz every time in a baseball game, because he's a better baseball player.

I know this is going to sound crazy, but Babe Ruth was, and probably still is currently, a better baseball player than Jerry Hairston Jr.

He went wrong a lot of places in that interview' date=' including that question. Aside from the first two minutes of the interview where he said "yes, I did it" the whole thing was ridiculous. Made me sick, especially having to see it 300 times on SportsCenter within a 24 hour period.[/quote']

s***, even the first 2 minutes were tainted, he spent the first 45 seconds prefacing his admission with excuses...the pressure of the contract, the culture of baseball, and his young and naive nature. The entire "speech"...it wasn't an interview, it was a scripted response to questions he, his handlers and Gammons agreed would be asked...was a pack of lies, half-truths, misdirections and excuses.

Yet still, to my amazement, some people bought it. Most did not.

I find it an insult to my intelligence and to the intelligence of every other baseball fan that he thought he could throw that garbage at us and we'd somehow commend him for his "honesty"...he banked on the forgiving nature, and quite possibly the idiocy, of his fans, and to me that's completely insulting and unforgiveable.

Given the changes in military technology' date=' probably not. But that's a pretty awful example.[/quote']

I know it's not the best example. But I hope it at least highlights the point I'm trying to make.

Plus more supplements and the occasional PED as well.

Ok that's fair, but where do you draw the line for what's considered a PED? Is it just anabolic steroids? Or do greenies,Amphetamines(both Mike Schmidt has admitted to using during his day), and gatorade count as well? These are all things that where not available for previous generations, but no one is killing them for using them.

Of course it's speculation. But if your reasonable in anyway this shouldn't be that hard to consider. Most guys that lived on beer and hot dogs couldn't play at an elite level in today's game.

You are trying to make a relative comparision while using absolutes. You are assuming the habits/work ethic of a 1920's Ruth would be the same if he were playing today. I disagree, and I think you need to make a relative assumption re: the player's behavior. If he were playing today, I think it's no stretch to suggest he'd be preparing himself the way players do now. What makes Ruth great is that he was that much better than his peers.

I don't disagree that the level of play has improved, but you need to make the assumption that any player would be doing what his peers are doing to be ready to play, regardless of era.

Fair enough.

Yes Ruth was much better then the peers that where allowed to play with him in that era.

Is it fair to assume that a lot of players including Ruth (possibly) wouldn't even be in the league today, given that all ethnic groups are allowed to participate now?

While training methods were not as sophisticated in Ruth's day, it doesn't mean that the players were less physically fit. They ran more building endurance, and Ruth used to retreat to his winter cabin where he chopped wood with an ax all winter long. Have you seen the footage Ruth swinging an ax? That was as aerobic and strength building as anything a modern athlete does today. It targeted his wrists, forearms and shoulders. It also worked on his hand-eye coordination. From a stamina standpoint, those old-timers were probably better conditioned than today's prima dona's with their energy drinks and power bars.

I don't know. Back then, there were only 16 teams. Now there are 30.

There are twice as many teams today, and the talent is very diluted despite all the ethnic groups that participate. I think the stars of that era would have found a spot in todays game.

Ok I see where you guys are coming from. You bring valid points to the discussion.

But since we can not be sure(outside of cloning these guys:D), I just think we shouldn't compare players/stats of different generations. Instead just embrace the differences and make them known. Instead of trying to lump everyone in together.

Posted

I don't really get my jollies with stats...i.e. I don't care who has the most HR's or most K's.

What I always have sort of like is looking at a guys stats for a season relative to other players, just to see who had monster years. Stuff like:

1925 Rogers Hornsby hit .403, Slugged .756, OBP was .476, 39 HRs, 143 RBIs in 138 games. That's impressive. In fact his 1921-1925 seasons were all absolutely ridiculous.

Or 1921, Ruth leads majors with 59 Hrs...next highest was 24! Ruth also hit .378 that year, slugged .846, and his PBO was .509...amazing season.

Williams 1941 campaign, hit .406, slugged .735, OBP was .551, lead the league in HRs, just off the lead in RBI's, had 145 walks, 6th in hits...dead pull hitter, with a shift against him, and he hit right through the fkn shift...tremendous.

I like that stuff...not so much who has the most of this or that all time.

And yet DiMaggio won the MVP

DiMaggio had a tremendous season, but it's really not even close. Williams got jobbed. But Hell, they put Phil Rizzuto in the HoF. Phil Rizzuto! The David Eckstein of his day.

You know, I can appreciate A-Rod coming out and doing that interview with Gammons and then facing reporters with this press conference but would it too much to ask for the f***ing guy to speak from the heart once in awhile? I'm sick of these prepared statements

For real. The dude is just such a fake ass in general.

He's coming up very short in this press conference...

He didn't even really think he was cheating? Didn't even know if he was doing it right? "I was only 25-26 years old."

f*** that. Only 25 years old? I wasn't that "young" and "naive" when I was 16.

I'll add that I don't care about steroids -- I don't care if he used them, but f***, just man up and be honest.

Yeah, um, that was a pretty lame excuse there. He also totally stepped around the first initial question.

Posted

Exactly, you know your entire life that certain things, like smoking, are bad for you. How is it possible that at 25 years old, you don't know that being injected with s*** is bad for you?

He's stepping out of everything, he was asked about Moyer and Oswalt's comments and all he has to say is "I'm sorry he feels that way".

Posted

Is anyone, or did anyone, listen to the press conference? I can't at work, but there is a blog being updated on NYDailyNEws.com after every question and answer.

Right off the bat he pulled exactly the s*** we expected.

Q:"What was the benefit of the substance you took?"

A: "I'm not sure what the benefit was. I will say this, when you take any substance or anything, it's half phyical and half mental. If you take this glass of water and say it's going to make me a better baseball palyer, and you believe it, it'll make you a better baseball player ... it gave me more energy, but it's hard to say."

But then he admits it was somethign he injected...you don't inject stuff if you don't know what it is and what it is expected to do. This is going to be f***ing hilarious...you can't make this s*** up!

Posted

I'm listening right now and I just don't understand this strategy.

He's dodging every question when clearly, the best course of action is to be up front and honest about it. Why let public opinion dictate how you are viewed? If you let public opinion dictate how you're viewed, you will ALWAYS be viewed in the worst possible light. Like the example question rician blast said above:

Q:"What was the benefit of the substance you took?"

Why not answer:

A:"My understanding of steroids was that they make you a better player overall. They make you faster and stronger. At that age, I may not have considered the harm they do or how it could haunt me in the future but as a kid breaking in, I was looking for every advantage I could get."

There you go. An honest answer and one where if everyone took a step back and listened to what he was saying, they could completely understand and relate. Instead, he spouts ******** about steroids being a placebo. He couldn't possibly take a worse PR hit than he already has unless he was lying in what he told Gammons. But every question at that interview was leading him to elaborate on what he's already admitted to.

Posted

It's like watching the VP debate all over again.

"I may not answer the questions the way that either the moderator or you want to hear..."

Posted

Q: Did you ever experiment with HGH or amphetamines?

A: "What I used to take a lot, especially in my Seattle days, was rip fuel. I believe it's since been banned by MLB and taken off the shelves at GNC."

Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

It's called RIPPED FUEL and it contained ephedra...it was a cutting agent, and was not a steroid. It probably did act like an amphetamine.

ARod tested positive for testosterone and methenolone...he's been told that, yet he still says he doesn't know what he used. ALex...numbnuts...they TOLD you what you tested for!

DId a little research: Methenolone (brand name Primobolan) is one of the mildest steroids...low estrogenic effects, great when stacked with testosterone because, as an injectable, you can inject each drug a couple of times per month, with low damage to liver function and minimal impact on cholesterol. It is considered the drug of choice with beginners, those who don't require the mass building effects of the hard-core steroids and get this...it is one of the least detectable 'roids.

I can find no evidence that any OTC supplement includes, or has EVER included, methenolone as an ingredient, and you won't test positive because you ate beef that had been injected with the stuff.

He's a f***ing liar.

Posted

I'm not too impressed with his performance during today's press conference.

i just want to focus on baseball now. f*** A-Rod, f*** steroids, f*** all this ********. It is what it is, we all know the case here. What can we do?

Posted

It's really up to A-Rod. If he wants to hold a press conference to give a generic statement making excuses and then dodging every question and contradicting himself then he's the one responsible for this dragging on and on.

I'd like to think who his media adviser is has an actual idea of how the media works and if he/she thought today's circus was gonna be the end of it, he/she needs to look into a new line of work.

Posted
In his opening remarks all he says is that in 2001-2003 he and his cousin did some stuff called bole...but didn't know what it was. My guess is that this was the Primobolan...and my guess is that he knew very well what he was taking.
