SANTO DOMINGO, Domican Republic -- Pedro Martinez and the Florida Marlins are believed to be in the beginning stages of negotiating a contract and could meet next week, a source told ESPNdeportes.com Saturday night.

The Marlins have spoken with Martinez's agent, the source said.

The Marlins would not confirm any interest, and MLB.com, the Miami Herald and South Florida Sun-Sentinel all cited sources as saying that the team is not interested in the 37-year-old.

Martinez has won three Cy Young awards and has a career record of 214-99, with a 2.91 ERA and 3,117 strikeouts in 17 seasons with Los Angeles, Montreal, Boston and the New York Mets.

Don't see where Pedro fits.

Florida might sign him in an effort to actually put some butts in seats. Not a small dominican contingency around Miami.

I'd like to see him sign with the Rays. It would be interesting so see him back in the AL East. The Rays need help that he may be able to provide.

Pedro looked like he had good stuff in the WBC. I think he can be effective for someone as a SP. I think he could be very effective as a closer. Not sure how his shoulder would fair on back to back days or multiple times a week though. But if he could handle it, Pedro letting it loose for 1 inning could get some results.

The guy was essentially put on 6 days rest back in 04 and couldnt hack the strains of the national league rotation when he was in NY..

The last time I saw him pitch Pittsburg knocked him out of the game in the 2nd inning.

Give it up, spend some of your money and relax, youre done.
