That or they needed a roster spot for each of Smoltz, Penny, Bard and Baldelli and thought Zink had a chance to get through waivers.

 

Seriously, he's not going to see very much big league time for us, but a team like the Royals, Orioles, Nats or Rangers might benefit from giving him a few chances. I hope he does well.

They really see more upside in Hansack than Zink? I didnt know this but MLB.com named Zink the AAA starting pitcher of the year

THe mayy see Hansack as having more upside in the pen and neither of them really profiling as fits for Boston's rotation. It's not an unreasonable position.

I think by our responses, you should be able to tell we are saying the same thing without actually saying "these guys are f***ing awful." What's wrong with that?

I don't know, I see Miguel Gonzalez, our rule 5 pick going back if need be. The likelihood of a rule 5 draft pick succeeding (or staying with the team) isn't great anyway.

 

And for the record, Zink is still with the team since he accepted a minor league assignment. I'd bet that a team would claim Pauley, but in the event of that not occuring, we'd also be able to keep Pauley.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox traded for a catcher with multiple smaller pieces which may alleviate the current logjam problem on the 40 man roster. And you know, possibly solve our catcher dilemma.

The Mid-Atlantic Sports Network reports the Orioles have traded RHP Randor Bierd to the Red Sox for RHP David Pauley.

 

Bierd, Rule 5 draft pick from the Tigers last year, had a promising start to the season before coming down with a sore shoulder. He could emerge as a late-inning reliever down the road if he's fully recovered. Pauley was recently designated for assignment by the BoSox after posting a 9.53 ERA in nine appearances over the past three seasons. Though he's still relatively young at 25, his potential is limited by a mediocre fastball.

Haha, I think it was David Pauley who took over in relief for Josh Beckett in the second inning when he blowed big time in New York one night in '06. The night I happened to go all the way to Yankee Stadium to see him. Yeahhh, that was a good night.

I don't know about this. I mean it seemed like two teams exchanging each other's garbage. I don't see either being of any value or importance. Other than get rid of Pauley (albeit by taking on Beird) what does this do for the Sox? Is this able to help with the spacing issue if we can get Beird to sign a minor league deal?

 

I just don't see the use/relevance for this trade.
