The Yankees have signed RHP Jason Johnson to a minor-league deal. Joe Girardi said Johnson would compete to be the fifth starter.

Some other minor news, Shelley Duncan was DFA'd to make room for Tex. Phil Coke will train as a starter for spring training.

What I did get out of that is that Coke will be training to be the 5th starter. Thats good news. Since out of the trio of Hughes, Coke and Joba, he's the only one who has been built up enough to take on a full MLB workload as he threw 150IP last yr and should be in line to see 180.

I do find it funny. We dont even have a AA spot to offer him. Assuming we sign a veteran for the #5 hole, this is what we will have sitting in AAA and below

AAA

1. Hughes

2. Kennedy

3. Coke

4. Aceves

5. Kontos

6. Hacker- maybe to pen

AA

1. McCallister

2. Pope

3. De la Rosa

4. Horne

5. Garcia

A+

1. Betances

2. Brackman

3. Bleich

4. Heredia

5. Mitchell

A

1. Marshall

2. Phelps

3. Banuelos

4. Vizcaino

5. --------->

You have to go all the way down to A ball to find an open slot in one of the rotations and I dont think Johnson is even good enough to beat out the pitchers in that league

Everyone keeps forgetting about IPK, he has better stuff than Coke's and is in like for around 180 IP, probably more.

Are you serious? Coke is a hard-throwing lefty, Kennedy is a soft-tossing righty. I'll take Coke over IPK anyday...although I think Coke is best used in the bullpen. If he starts, we only have one lefty reliever. I guess it is a long-shot he makes the rotation anyway.

As for jason Johnson, it's really not a terrible signing. He's not being expected to contribute or anything, he just adds depth in case of massive injuries, which as we all know are possible. Signing guys like Mitre, Johnson, etc can turn out to be big moves in the long run. If I were to bet though he doesn't see the Bronx at all this season.

Kennedy had better stuff prior to last yr. Kennedy has a deeper arsenal, but Coke's FB jumped to mid 90s last yr and he developed the plus slider while junking his curveball. Also, there are 2 other lefties that I expect us to see this yr. Both made the 40 man. Wilkins de la Rosa whose FB as a reliever gets as high as 98mph and Michael Dunn whose FB jumped from 91-92 as a starter to 95-96 as a reliever.

Who was Phil Coke prior to those 14 IPs last September?

Do you seriously think Coke throws 95 MPH FB as a starter? He goes as much as 92-93. As a starter he's a lefty with 3 average pitches. It took 4 YEARS to Coke to pitch above A-Ball. He's a good reliever and maybe a spot starter. IPK has dominated every minor league level so far, and his Milb numbers are way better than Coke's.

Is this a hoax? If not' date=' it just made my day. He is the worst starting pitcher in history.[/quote']

:lol::lol::lol:

Weren't we just talking about Jason Johnson as the epitome of a bad starting pitcher? This is a funny twist, huh?

Strange, I had it in my head that he actually pitched well for the Dodgers last year only be to shown otherwise when I looked up his stats

Low cost high risk move if he makes the rotation.

I don't know why you guys laugh, the Yanks really know how to get a fluke season from anybody. Check guys like Aaron Small or Dan Giese.

I'm going to say a prayer tonight that this bum makes the Yankees starting rotation. If he does, I'll make the prediction right now that they will finish out of the playoff picture for the second year in a row.

Sidney Ponson, Kei Igawa, Tyler Clippard, Matt DeSalvo, Jaret Wright, Scott Erickson, Kris Wilson, Octavio Dotel, Al Leiter, Alan Embree, Mike Stanton (2005), Esteban Loaiza. That's just since 2004.

So yeah, I would say fluke would be the right word.

I'm not disputing any of those points, I'm just saying Coke throws harder than Kennedy.

Could you consider Mussina's 08 a flukish type year, Considering his 07 season?

Or is this more of one good year for the yanks, never heard from again type deal?

What, you didn't know that the Yankees acquired Aaron Small specifically for those two months in late 2005? They knew that would happen. Same thing with Giese last year, they saw what he was capable of from the time he was in low-A ball. f*** emergencies, the Yankees are just smart. Smart enough to know that a career f***up like Aaron Small was always hiding a superior talent that only the magic pinstripes could release. They're a step ahead of you and me, and five steps ahead of the rest of baseball. Maybe Selig should sanction their crystal balls.
