THe NY Post is really pushing this one with their article this morning, saying that Perez would fit in with the yankees plans of getting younger and more powerful. I guess they would. But Perez also doesnt fit into our plans in terms of a pitcher who could be absolutely lights out or be in the showers by inning #2. I dunno. Any other yankee fans on here agree with this possibility here? I kinda dont.

1. We need a guy who is durable for that #4 spot. Perez has been for the past 2 yrs, but wasnt in his days in Pitt. So, doesnt really fit with the hope of adding another 200IP pitcher to our rotation.

2. We need a guy who is consistent in the #4 spot. The back end of the rotation is not somewhere that you stash an ace. You want to get a good QS% out of them though. And Perez isnt that at all. He's a guy who has an equal chance of throwing a 2 hit shutout as he does of walking 8 and giving up 7 runs.

3. Do we want to add a potential meltdown at big money? He is a Boras client. He could be ridiculously good and at his age, he could be here a long time. But he also could totally melt down. He does seem to get up for big games and has handled the yankees to the tune of 5-1 in his tenure with the Mets. But he's gonna get 4-5 yrs at 12-15 mil a yr. Do we make that kind of committment to a guy who could totally flame out?

I dunno. Not sold. Think he could be an awesome addition if things go his way. But the possibility of meltdown scares me at the yrs and money he will be asking for.

other than the fact I could care less about the money

I tend to agree with all you said

years would be my biggest concern

he's not at the top of my wish list

but would make us a better team than what we have today

like you mention he's still very young

but I still have high hopes for hughes later this yr of next yr

For that kind of money' date=' I'd rather roll the dice on Sheets.[/quote']

Me too.

I like Perez, but I dont like his inconsistency, and the fact that he's a Boras client is a big turn-off. He's going to want a boatload of money and the truth is that while he's shown flashes of superstardom and ace potential ever since he was in San Diego, he has just been way too inconsistent in New York, and for the money he would be making he just isn't worth it. Get a proven guy in here like Andy, and thenmaybe take a chance on Sheets, move Joba to the pen and shorten the game up and I think our pitching staff would be as good as it can get.

•Olney reports several teams are concerned about Ben Sheets' medical reports; however, it's his shoulder, not his elbow, that's worrisome.

Please feel free to sign this time bomb:D

Brad Penny?

Why, do you think you can get Sheets for 5M a season? At that price he might be worth a flier. if he requires more then a one year deal and anything over 8M+, I believe it to be a bad move.

Penny is within a 10-20% production rate of Sheets. But Sheets would presumabley cost 100%+ more to obtain(Penny 1 yr 5M, Sheets will most likely cost 1-2yrs+, 10M a season).

Yes Sheets is the better pitcher. But Penny is the better value.

That is what I was trying to get at.

Yes, the only way they can't is when there is a certain number of A FA available. This class was above that number, so they are free to sign at will I believe.

They most certainly took advantage of not having to loose valuable picks, I'll give them that.

What are the actual picks there giving up and to who?

I read somewhere that the Brewers got their 1st rounder' date=' Blue Jays got their 2nd and Angels got the Yankees' 3rd pick. Great outlook on their 09 draft thus far

depends how you look at it

if they had traded for santana last yr

they would have given up just as much talent

this way they got aj and tex without loosing anymore picks

Angels 1st, Brewers 2nd, Blue Jays 3rd. I posted it in another thread where this was discussed, with a link. I'll try and find it.
