So when are the Sox going to sign someone?

No Offense but its all been about the Yankees with Burnett, CC, Sabathia, Swisher, Cash...

I think the Sox should go after Abreau or Dunn.

THe only positions where signing someone makes sense are SP and possibly C and in each case there's not a lot of choices that are definitely better than what we already have

Maybe you go after Rocco Baldellii as a bench OF but then again, maybe you see what Jon Van Every's got too. Catcher will probably be resolved in a trade unless we bring 'Tek back. In all I don't see a lot of improvements this tean can make on the FA market this year.

I see Varitek coming back on a 2 year deal. If they do sign a starting pitcher' date=' it will be a 1 or 2 year incentive laden deal to Smoltz/Penny[/quote']

Ya, I see it that being possible. Maybe they add a young Catcher threw trade. But unless there is some blockbuster out there we couldn't phathom at this point, that's about it.

I dont think the sox are gonna do much signing. Sheets is gonna get the tires kicked, but someone will offer him 3 yrs and I doubt theo is stupid enough to do that when Buchholz, Bowden and Masterson are MLB ready right now. Smoltz is a pipe dream. He's 41 and just came off reconstructive shoulder surgery, something that no pitcher comes out of unscathed. Penny is a friggin enigma and might be a good one yr reclamation project type signing. But regardless, you have 3 pitchers with high ceilings who are MLB ready, it makes no sense to let them wallow in the minors when they have all reached innings caps that allow them to handle the workload of the #5 slot in the rotation.

I like the Idea of Dunn's power. But I don't see a spot for him, unless the Sox moved someone. But to that i'd hope they be getting a Catcher in return.

Penny > Smoltz

Injury prone > Old and injury prone

I disagree. If it's only a one year contract, age isn't very important. Smoltz's numbers are better than Penny, over his career and over the past few years.

they arent gonna sign someone just for the hell of signing someone but if they go into the season without going outside the organization for a starting pitcher, ill be very disappointed

My point was, I'm more confident in Penny's health than Smoltz's.

Okay.

Also, not to contradict myself, but I think I read that Smoltz wouldn't be able to pitch until mid-season, so he would be more of a Colon type option than a rotation spot. I may be mistaken on that one though.

Id say the top 2 priorities for the Sox are now catcher and right handed outfielder. After that its 5th starter if they do choose to go to the FA route. I like the bullpen they have set up for 2009, but if any deals come along the way, nice to have extra depth

Either CC, Sabathia or the inclusion of Cash in that list. haha...perhaps I can list every other minor league signing for you if you guys are interested.

Too bad I didn't do an offseason transaction guide this year like in years past. I seem to do it every other year, just like A-Rod wins MVPs

Come to think of it, the years that I've done it A-Rod didn't win MVP. Since I've started doing it, the years that I haven't done it he has won. If he wins MVP this season I'll never do it again.

Every time I make a Minor Moves thread, the Yankees sign CC, AJ and Tex. *Cue Twilight Zone music*

I think the Sox will definitely trade for a catcher--question is will it be Montero or one of the Rangers backstops?

The Sox will have to give up much less in prospects if it is Montero--assuming Byrnes is packaged with him. This also solves the Sox 4th OF'er conundrum.

I also think there is a good chance that the Sox sign Sheets or Penny. You can never have enough starting pitching depth and i wouldn't hurt Clay or Bowden to spend some time in AAA. Masterson should be in the pen giving the Sox the deepest pen in baseball.

If they don't sign Montero I see the Sox trading for Tegarden or Salty with Bowden being the main player going to Texas.
