With AJ and CC in NYC now does that make them the fav. in the east?

Yeah and that's why I like the opt-out. If he gives you 3 Sabathia-like years and bounces' date=' great deal for you guys, since he is not getting better after that.[/quote']

It is the most favorable opt out of all-time. He'll be 31, and the deal is not back or front-loaded. If it was back-loaded, he'd be more likely to stay and we have diminishing returns. If it's front loaded, he'd definitely opt out and it would be detrimental to the payroll.

However, you have ignorant people who will state 7 years, 161 million, blah blah blah. The way I see it, the Yankees are on the hook for 151 million, which is still less than what you guys spent for Drew, Lugo, and Dice-K.

However, we're not done yet, lol.

Secondly' date=' the deal for Sabathia is $69 million for 3 years. Don't kid yourself. [b']If he does well, or just maintains the status quo, he's out.[/b] If he hates NY, he's out. The current trend is to opt out, and he's a very safe bet to opt out.

Really? You think that at age 31 he'll get more than 23m a year on the open market? He may, but the only team that will be paying him more than that will be the Yankees.

What do you suspect will happen over the next 3 years that will make him suddenly worth MORE than 23m a year, when no other team was willing to go that high at 29 after two years of dominance?

It seems to me that if he opted out he will be taking less money to go somewhere he likes more, and the money will have to be very favorable to whatever team he signs with. It seems unlikely to me, but I suppose it could happen.

Considering the market changes over the past few years, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Sabathia get more than 23/year in the 2011-12 off-season.

A better economy. If K-Rod would have hit the market last year, don't you think that he would have made more than 37 million over 3 years?

Everything you say seems to make the most sense to me. Keep it up I enjoy reading a poster who tells it like it is without the Pinstripped or Red glasses.

The economy may have something to do with it, but K-Rod's contract is the 3rd highest in history for a relief pitcher. He is placed 3rd between Mariano, Lidge and Joe Nathan. BJ Ryan was one of the best closers in 2006 when he was signed as a free agent, and he made 9.4m AAV. Teams realize that having a good closer is important, but it is a highly overrated position if your team isn't very good and most teams know that.

When Manny and A-Rod signed in 2000 for over $20m, many people assumed that in a few years those contracts would be eclipsed. They weren't. In fact, they really weren't until A-Rod signed again, and few players are making over 20m a year.

And that was before his record-setting 2008.

Times is rough, we're all headed to the poor house.

CC Sabathia, $23,000,000 (2009-15)

Johan Santana, $22,916,667 (2008-13)

Carlos Zambrano, $18,300,000 (2008-12)

Barry Zito, $18,000,000 (2007-13)

Jake Peavy, $17,333,333 (2010-12)

A.J. Burnett, $16,500,000 (2009-13)

Andy Pettitte, $16,000,000 (2008)

Jason Schmidt, $15,666,667 (2007-09)

Mike Hampton, $15,125,000 (2001-08)

Roy Oswalt, $14,600,000 (2007-11)

I see a lot of premier pitchers who have been signed as FAs over the past few years, and only Santana got over 20m, which I think still represents an elite threshold for players payment.

Top 10 contracts AAV in history:

Roger Clemens, $28,000,022 (2007)

Alex Rodriguez, $27,500,000 (2008-17)

Alex Rodriguez, $25,200,000 (2001-10)

CC Sabathia, $23,000,000 (2009-15)

Johan Santana, $22,916,667 (2008-13)

Roger Clemens, $22,000,022 (2006)

Manny Ramirez, $20,000,000 (2001-08)

Miguel Cabrera, $19,037,500 (2008-15)

Derek Jeter, $18,900,000 (2001-10)

Carlos Zambrano, $18,300,000 (2008-12)

7 of the 10 are NY players, 6 of those are Yankees. Only one player from Boston, one in Detroit and one in Chicago otherwise. The one from Detroit is a likely Hall of Famer in his mid 20s, Zambrano is the rock of a high-value franchise, and Manny is a first ballot HOF player in a top market.

I don't see any huge swing toward really expensive contracts, I've seen a slight increase in AAV over time, but nothing suggesting that by 2011 it will be commonplace for a pitcher to make 25m a year like A-Rod does. A-Rod's contract will likely be the cap for a long time, given that he is (supposedly) a 5 tool player in his prime, possibly the best of all time by the time he is done.

I'm only counting 4 Yankees there: 2007 Clemens' date=' 2008 Rodriguez, 2009 Sabathia, 2001 Jeter. 01 Rod was Texas and 06 Clemens was Houston.[/quote']

Yes, you're absolutely right. The Yankees ended up paying the end of A-Rod's contract when TEX tried to move him to someone better able to afford it, but he definitely signed with TEX.

Most of Clemens's contracts were pro-rated, but the AAV represents the anual value of that pro-rating.

Even removing those, the huge contracts are still inordinately NY, and lean heavily toward NYY.

Have you guys heard of any other teams willing to pay 20m a year for any of these guys? I don't remember reading or hearing about anything like that. Teixeira is getting some 20ish offers apparently, but he fits the mold of FA's who are in their young prime who have shown superior production. Those guys are few and far between.

I'm willing to bet that Sabathia doesn't get offered more than 23m in 3 years. First, I don't think he a good enough pitcher to warrant it NOW, let alone in 3 years. Second, I think in 3 years teams will be just about where they are now, and 20m will be worth roughly what it is worth now.

So Diaper...you're a Red Sox fan, and a racist. Nice.

From what I've heard, the two go hand in hand, don't they? Just ask Jim Rice or Mo Vaughn.

Not enough? How about draft picks: Jonathan Papelbon, Dustin Pedroia, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson. Plus the jury is still out on Buchholz, Bowden, Ellsbury, Lars, etc.

Wow Theo is a GM and also a scouting director? He's Super Theo!

Sometimes you need to think before you type, so you don't type something stupid, and get own3d afterwards, case in point.

Racist as it may be' date=' that picture was too f***ing funny [/quote']

Thank you, comedy gold, i know.

As far as racist, i'm latin, so i get a free pass.

And Gom, even if you may call me diaper (it's been done, so it simply amuses me, though it probably took you all night to come up with it), how does that take away from the fact that you are, in fact, the anti-role model?, kinda like O.J, just a little bit dumber, and you prove your criminal talents by being a terrorist on a message board and chasing 16-year-old Japanese girls?

This is the singularly most idiotic statement ever made on this board that was not baseball related.

I'll let this one go, most of your posts have been intelligent, so we'll let it go as a brain-fart.

Nah, I came up with diaper immediately. Kind of like OJ? A bit dumber? Calling someone a terrorist and a child-molester?

Go and make me a cheeseburger and then cut the grass. The only spics I see where I'm from work at the diner or mow my lawn. I have no respect for someone who came over here illegally on a floating door.

If you get a free pass, so should we.

Better yet' date=' [b']ask your role model Gom, hell, he's smart[/b], he respects Theo and his work, and he's not even a Red Sox fan!!!!!

Which one is it?

I only have one qualm about this......

I don't live in the States man, and if i wanna go, i'll go on a paper plane, not a floating door.

And also, i'm a Cum Laude law school graduate so there's a pretty good chance you'll end up making me a cheeseburger and mowing my lawn if ya keep up the child molesting.

And of course you need to admit, that racist as the picture may be, it's still funny, so if you laughed you do get a free pass.

And about the role model thing, it's just the fact that even YOU have some common sense.

Getting a degree from the Dominican Republic is like winning a race in the special olypics. You're still retarded, and it doesn't mean s***.

A Dominican degree has much more credibility to me now, seeing as you got one in the States, and you didn't even have to go to a "special kid" college, so i'm pretty sure there's a much higher standard to retards here seeing as your IQ is about 30 points lower than your average door-riding-to-the-states Dominican.

No. He's a closer. When he Mets signed Wagner, the best closer on the market 3 years ago, it was to a $10.75M AAV. Rodriguez got $12.33M per year over 3 years, plus a $17.5M vesting option. That reflects, just like CC and Burnett's signings do, continued inflation in the market for the top tier talent.

Gom, this is where you show that your claims of objectivity are nothing more than an ego massage. Every business in America would consider CC a $161M liability in their financial forecasting right now. The Yankees have no say in the matter, so they are committed to pay that to him. A guy who works in the financial sector should know this.
