Sox ask to host 2012 All-Star Game

BOSTON -- When the Red Sox spend the 2012 season commemorating the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park, there's a chance there will be a centerpiece event that would have emotions stirring throughout the game.

Red Sox president/CEO Larry Lucchino confirmed on Thursday that the club has already requested to Major League Baseball that Boston have an upcoming All-Star Game at Fenway, preferably in 2012.

 

"We have made a request to have another All-Star Game at Fenway Park in light of the upcoming 100th anniversary and the changes that have taken place," Lucchino said Thursday during part of a media availability in which the club was announcing Year VIII improvements of Fenway.

 

MLB has already announced that the 2009 All-Star Game will be in St. Louis and the 2010 Midsummer Classic will be at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

 

There has yet to be any decision on 2011-2013.

 

If Lucchino and the Red Sox have their druthers, Fenway will be in the mix.

 

"That issue is resolved by the Commissioner's Office, above my pay grade," quipped Lucchino.

 

But unlike the 2008 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, this would not be a sendoff for ancient Fenway.

 

Lucchino feels that the Red Sox will maintain residence at Fenway for years to come.

 

"I think it's the little engine that could, and it has proven to be that in the last several years in particular," Lucchino said. "We think it can continue to be as long as it is full of passionate Red Sox fans."

 

Under previous ownership, the Red Sox had planned to build a new Fenway Park. But once the new group led by John W. Henry, Tom Werner and Lucchino took over in February 2002, the priority shifted to renovating the ballpark and making it more modern each year, something the club has been successful in doing.

 

The All-Star Game was last held at Fenway Park in 1999

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox are adding more seats to 96-year-old Fenway Park.

The team is working on adding 560 new seats to the Major Leagues' oldest and smallest ballpark.

 

Workers were using jackhammers in the rain Thursday in the lower deck and cranes are on the field as part of another round of offseason renovations. It's the eighth year of ballpark improvements since the team was purchased by the group led by John Henry.

 

This year's work also includes waterproofing and repairing the lower deck, fixing the roof beyond third base and adding seats to the upper deck beyond the first-base line.

This would be a nice tribute for Fenway's 100th anniversary. I just hope the Yankees win the 2011 World Series so you guys have to deal with what we dealt with this year having to watch Francona and co. control the Yankee Stadium home dugout and clubhouse.

I was aware of that, I wasnt being ignorant. It was quite different then though. The rivalry wasn't as intense at that time period.

It really was for some reason. Having all those Red Sox on the team, plus the Boston coaching staff patrolling the home clubhouse during the last year of the Stadium. Plus the Papelbon nonsense didn't help things
