GM Brian Cashman hopes that Yankee fans understand that their team has reached its budget limit and will not pursue Manny Ramirez. "We chose to put our money into Mark Teixeira," he said. "Everybody expects us to get in on Manny, but that's not going to happen....When you add all our payroll up to where we're at, we're tapped." -- NY Daily News

True' date=' but so far that isn't going his way. He'd probably need another MVP season to bolster the market for him so he CAN then sit back and let Manny be Manny, just in 2010 instead of 2009.[/quote']

Thus his refusal of the 1 year deal, even at 25M.

I'm SHOCKED a Yankee actually said something like that

This would not allow Manny to return to his normal self. He would have to hustle all season and not be a pain in the ass' date=' for him to get a long term deal the following year. Manny doesn't want to have to do that. He did his hustling already, now he wants his money so he can relax, and get back to Manny being Manny.[/quote']

That's probably what's going through Manny's mind at this very moment.

I'm hoping he does settle on a 1 year deal somewhere that way next year when Matsui, Damon, Nady, others come off the books we have room and money for him :D

...what a lineup that would be. 2-3-4-5: Jeter-Teixeira-Alex-Manny. OH MANNN!!!

I hope the Yankees commit serious money to him next offseason.

Manny's an all time great, but I don't see him being productive for another one or two seasons. Not $20+ million anyway.

Why wouldn't they commit serious money to him this year if they were going to do it next year?

Because a conscious organizational effort has been made to keep this year's payroll under last year's payroll.

I hope if they do commit serious money to him it's not long-term, which is probably what he'll be hoping for if he does indeed settle for a 1 year this offseason. I do think he'll remain very productive over the next few years, but definitely not worth $20 mil. But that's of course what he'll expect and he'll most certainly get it. In a utopic world we would sign him for 2 years, but in a perfect world I would settle for about 3 years, $62 Mil, if he would even take that. That's a bit much though maybe, but I can see it happening.

Also remember Damon, Matsui and possibly Nady coming off the books, giving them "payroll flexibility", as if such a thing as a payroll has ever stopped the Yankees from getting a player they covet.

Because they have nowhere to play him right now.

You think if Manny takes a 1 year deal and plays another good season, he will back down from his original goal? Next off season he is still going to want 3-4 years at 20-25M per. And if some team actually pays him that much, they will need to ad a postal service area to the locker room, for all the mail Manny will be sending in.

Nah I want Matt Holliday.

not sure if I want Holliday yet. His numbers outside Coors were good, but not great. And he's gonna want great player kind of coin. His yr in Oakland should be telling. If he puts up a .335 30HR 120RBI season in that park, then I'd hand him a blank contract and he can fill in the numbers

So what? The Yankees always seem to pay great player coin for several guys who aren't great. Why should Holliday be treated any differently?

Since when is that an issue for you or anyone else associated with the NYY?

Batting average........LOL.

If he goes .300/.390/.480 with 25 HRs in Oakland. I'd give him 5 years. Swisher and Holliday solve our OF for years to come.

.326 .340 and .321 the last 3 yrs. Not out of the realm of possibility.

I meant who the f*** cares about batting average.

That's the least likely stat to decline while in Oakland.

It's his power numbers you should be worried about.

In all fairness, to accomplish that at the A's ballpark would be astonishing. He'd deserve a blank cheque if he were able to pull those numbers in such a pitcher's ballpark. It would become a dog fight in order to get him when he is a free agent. He'd be every team's favourite target...

Fixed that for ya......;)

I thought I would have to be wrong in some way shape or form, and then corrected by you in order to be pawned. Geez dude, whose team are you on? Trying to pawn one's own brethren is not acceptable Red Sox fan behaviour....

You should save that energy for pawning Jacko, Diony, or that other Yankee fan dude whom I cannot remember.

I wholeheartedly apologize, but in my defense, the comment was made based on pure comedic value and not to diminish the importance of your posts bringing them to the level of the couple of ballwashers (j/k) you mention above.
