Darren Oliver sporting a 2.88 ERA while pitching meaningful innings has to be one of the biggest head scratchers of the season. The only ones that are bigger off the top of my head are Balfour and Howell.

Bad luck there. Did Aybar trip him up or did he trip over the base?

He didn't get into his slide until he was practically at the bag, and his momentum took him beyond it.

There's nothing in either's history to suggest the year they had was forthcoming. Just like Oliver. They've had good stuff all year, no doubt, but I'm talking about reasonable expectation going into the year. Balfour has had control issues his whole career that he magically got over. Howell is pitching better in his rate stats than he did in the minors.

You know, you could say the exact same thing about Okajima. These guys were talented enough to be signed into a major league system. The talent is there, it's just a question of whether they can put it all the way together.

"No I understand, not saying I expected it, but I am saying I don't think it's a fluke."

Have you looked at Balfour and Howell's stats this season??

These guys aren't this good.

Lowell sucks.

Aren't that good? Or have never played that well? Distinction seems small, but it matters.

Howell wouldn't be the first lefthander pitcher by a transition from the rotation to the pen. That's pretty normal.

Balfour is the only real mystery here, but he just looks like he's just being "effectively wild" this year, and the line between effectively wild and just plain wild is pretty thin. Looks like he's just a man who found The Right Coach to put one good year together.
