Red Sox have one more for the road

Boston (90-64) at Toronto (83-72), Sunday, 1:07 p.m. ET

By Ian Browne / MLB.com

TORONTO -- If the Red Sox can pull out a victory on Sunday against the Blue Jays, they would not only win the series, but also be on the precipice of qualifying for the postseason for the fifth time in the last six years. A win, after all, would put the magic number down to one. In that case, the Red Sox would still need a loss by the Yankees, who play Sunday night against the Orioles, to clinch a playoff spot.

Either way, the Red Sox are getting to the point where they can taste October.

"I've been trying not to think too much about it yet, because it's not quite set in stone," said Red Sox left fielder Jason Bay. "I realize it's on the doorstep. It's just a little different for me, because I'm used to counting the days down to the season is over. Usually when we're in single digits, it's time to go home. I'm excited that, for the first time, hopefully I won't have to do that. I don't really want to think about it much yet, but it is on my mind, yeah."

The Red Sox have two races brewing. They lead the Yankees by 6 1/2 games in the American League Wild Card standings and will surely wrap that up at some point over their last eight games. They are also still within range in the American League East, trailing the Rays by 2 1/2 games.

"We're still trying to catch Tampa Bay," said Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury. "But yeah, it would have been nice to have won [saturday], but we've still got eight more."

In this one, the Sox send one of their best pitchers to the mound in Daisuke Matsuzaka. The right-hander recorded victory No. 17 in his last start, surpassing Hideo Nomo for most wins in a season by a Japanese pitcher. "The numbers alone might show that I've surpassed Nomo-san, but I don't think that I've actually passed him as a pitcher," Matsuzaka said. "All I want to do is keep striving to surpass him one day." Matsuzaka will be opposed by right-hander Scott Richmond.

This is Boston's final road game of 2008. The Sox are 38-42 on the road. After finishing up with the Blue Jays, Boston goes home to play a four-game series with the Guardians and then three with the Yankees.

Pitching matchup

BOS: RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (17-2, 2.93 ERA)

The righty didn't have to break much of a sweat in his last start, thanks to the Red Sox staking him to a 4-0 lead before he even threw a pitch. Matsuzaka wound up going five innings in that win against Tampa Bay, allowing one run while striking out seven. Matsuzaka has taken no-decisions in both of his starts against the Jays this season, allowing five runs over 13 innings. Matsuzaka is 8-0 in 12 road starts this season.

TOR: RHP Scott Richmond (0-2, 5.06 ERA)

Toronto is turning to the 29-year-old Richmond -- a native of North Vancouver, British Columbia -- to fill in for Shaun Marcum, who is done for the year with a right arm injury. Richmond was promoted to the Jays from Triple-A when rosters expanded on Sept. 1, but the right-hander has yet to pitch since being added to the bullpen. Richmond last pitched on Aug. 29, and he hasn't appeared in a game for the Jays since Aug. 10. In three starts for Toronto this year, Richmond allowed nine runs on 23 hits with 13 strikeouts and one walk over 16 innings. Jays manager Cito Gaston said Richmond will likely being limited to between 50-60 pitches.

Tidbits

The Red Sox will attempt to cool off the Blue Jays, who are 9-2 at Rogers Centre in September. ... Ellsbury is in the midst of an 11-game hitting streak. ... Dustin Pedroia is two stolen bases away from 20. ... The home run that Justin Masterson surrendered to Scott Rolen on Saturday was the first he served up since Torii Hunter took him deep at Fenway Park on July 30.

Why so much lack of energy when we are certainly in play-off and won a tough series in Torronto?
