For the intelligent Red Sox fan, would you make the deal for Santana at this point? The one that included Buchholz, Ellsbury, and Masterson, I believe?

You guys all know how I stand on the Yankee side, curious to know from your side your thoughts.

I am gagging.

I hate the thought too, but we're running out of options. Pauley, Hansack, a s***-stained carpet? They're all garbage, but we'll have to stomach one of them. We could try Bowden too, but some people might have reservations about that. I dunno.

Enough with this experiment for the kid this season, send him down and bring someone up that can win some games down the stretch. Better luck next year Clay

EDIT: Just saw he got demoted all the way down to portland, good its what he needs. Get a little pressure off

The Red Sox are 16-14 since the all star break. They were 1-5 with Buchholz pitching

They already sent him to Portland.

I have not changed my mind. From the beginning, I would have made this trade. I still think that Ellsbury has the potential to be a star, but who knows. He's got to make some major adjustments to get to that level. Buucholz maybe wrecked after this season. This season has been a disaster for him, and it will not be easy for him to recover. It is not like he had a terrible season with a young s***** team like the Nationals. He is on the Boston Red Sox, a team with more than $100 million in talent behind him when he pitches. He is pitching for a team with a top offense and a good defense, and he failed miserably. I believe that the other trade that was being offered was Lester, Crisp and Bowden or Masterson. I would have made that trade also, and I stand by that decision now too. Crisp stinks. He is a one way player with a terribly weak arm and his breaks on balls have reverted to his pre- 2007 years. Lester is looking great, but Santana is and will continue to be a top echelon pitcher. Very few guys are in his league. I would have done either of the trades at the time, and IMO getting Santana would have garnered two more championships in the next 3 years, especially if the Twins took the package with Ellsbury.

No.

Buchholz potential is still an ace starter. Ellsbury has done OK, all things considered in CF, and Masterson is looking like he'll either be a dominant reliever, or a good number three starter.

I'm not convinced that Santana would dominate the AL East, especially with his falling numbers, and declining fastball.

Remember, this deal has five years left on it. At $20 million each. I'd rather sign Sabathia, and keep all five. (The deal was actually Lester, Ellsbury, Masterson, Lowrie, and Kalish for Santana) That way, the team is substantially stronger in the future.

If you removed Bucholz from this rotation with his 2-9 record and replaced him with a Paul Byrd -type who would pitch to a .500 record, the Sox would be neck and neck with Tampa. They stayed toooo long with this kid. One or two starts since he returned from the minors, it was clear to most of us that it was not going to happen for him this season. What took the FO so long? If the Sox don't make the playoffs, the performance of Bucholz and his horrendous 2-9 record will be the biggest factor.

There were two separate deals on the table.

The Twins wanted 2/3 of Buchholz, Ellsbury, and Lester.

After the yankees withdrew, I thought the twins came looking for the Lester package, but the Red Sox said it was no longer available.
