Wakefield scratched

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff August 10, 2008 12:00 PM

Tim Wakefield has been scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday with tightness in the back of his shoulder, the same injury that kept him off the World Series roster. Wakefield has already been sent back to Boston, where he'll be examined by Dr. Thomas Gill.

Wakefield will be placed on the disabled list. His replacement as the starter for Tuesday has not yet been announced

Not good news. DAMMIT! :(

There are currently two spots open on the 40-man roster and neither Bowden nor Zink are currently on. Zink just pitched on Friday so I doubt they start him on 3-4 days rest. Looking at the schedules I'm guessing it will be Hansack who would be pitching on full rest and has been going deep into games for the Pawsox.

A knuckleballer that breaks down every year. He may be at the end of the line with the Red Sox. He was useful for the 5th slot to pitch .500 ball and eat innings, but he has broken down in each of the last 3 seasons.

Last year Wakefield "broke down" to the tune of 189 or so innings pitched and 31 starts on the year.

This season he has already thrown 150, was on pace for more than 200, and my guess is that if the Sox didn't feel like they had a host of available options Wakefield would be taking his next start.

If he's a health-plagued borderline major leaguer I'm a fish.

This has a whole lot more to do with scheduled rest than a significant injury IMNSHO.

Welcome to Boston in advance, Charlie Zink.

It doesn't matter that he breaks down at 150 innings. The fact is that he has been breaking down in August in recent seasons. The Red Sox should hopefully be in penant races the next few seasons. Losing a starter in August puts the team in a bind. He's only useful if he can take the ball every fifth day the entire season. He can rest when the team gets to the playoffs.

He's missing two starts -- less than 2 weels -- in order to be as rested as possible for the stretch run.

"In recent seasons?" The only "recent season" he's done this was last year. The difference of these two years over the past is unprecedented depth that avoids the need to do what Wakefield would have done in the same situation in the bad old days -- play hurt.

Telling that he starts "breaking down" about the time the minor league season starts winding down, wouldn't you say?

Hopefully' date=' Colon will be up soon.[/quote']

Maybe but he's not ready right now.

Hansack, Bowden or Zink is what I'm hearing. But my ears aren't very good.

He missed substantial time in 2006 and was DL 'd also in August or September with a broken rib.

Charlie Zink?

He'll only be on 3 days rest, and Bowden is supposed to come in relief after Colon today, so if they scratch him it will probably be him. Hansack should get the start because he's the only one on normal rest.

I wish we had Masterson right now.
Why couldn't Masterson be slotted in for the start. Watch his pitch count and try to get 4 innings out of him. After that go to the pen. Can they bring up Chris Smith or is it too soon? Why start the game with a bag of garbage like Hansack who will have you blown out of the game by the 3 rd inning. If Masterson starts, it gives you a chance to jump on top, then you take it from there.

So someone here thinks this is the Sox way of putting a spring in Timmay's step come the end of the season? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Right now, the sox are 1 game up in the L column in the wild card race. They are actively trying to give the empire some hope as well. They already have one kid in the rotation who is clearly lost and needs some MiLB time. They also have another guy who puts up good ERA and win totals, but is a massive drain on the pen. So they picked now, of all times to put their third most consistent starter on the DL? Yeah right.

This one hurts, but you still havent reached our level of pain yet. Need another guy you have counted on this yr to take a dive. But with Colon not being close to ready and Buchholz being god awful, the sox are 3 deep in the rotation with 6 weeks to play. Meanwhile, the yankees are 2 deep and the twins seem to have caught fire at the wrong time. To be honest with you, this season may end up not having a NY or Boston team in the post season for the first time since 1993. Pitching wins championships and right now, both our teams are giving games away every turn in our rotation.

I think you misunderstood. I'm not saying they did it on a whim. What I am saying is that in past years Wake would probably have felt obligated to try and pitch through it. THis year he goes on the DL mostly because we have more alternatives than we used to -- and it's only gonna be for 2 starts.

I have no problem with Hansack or Zink (our versions of Rasner and Geise) coming up and making a spot start with the understanding that it's a temporary assignment.

I do know that if the problem was any kind of serious there's no way that any back or shoulder injury is going to be a "miss 2 starts and come straight back" kind of thing.

Dude, we were at your "level of pain" a year before YOU were there -- or do you need a refresher course in 2006? Couple points near the end there where only Beckett from the original 5 members of the opening day rotation was even pitching at all, and him badly.
