Again' date=' it's awesome how quick people forget how important Mark Bellhorn was for the Red Sox.[/quote']

Bellhorn did play very well but he was also very lucky during that 04 season. Generally speaking you aren't going to hit .250 if you strike out that much. If you can't hit .250 you aren't going to do very well unless you are hitting for a ton of power and walking a massive amount like Adam Dunn does.

Just like Jacoby Ellsbury was luck in 119 PAs last season?

Kilo-

Without getting in to, too deep a discussion of the numbers. I believe that Ellsbury's performance from 2007 is a lot closer to his level of talent than Bellhorn's 2004 numbers were to his level of talent.

That doesn't mean that I think that Ellsburry is going to have a .380 BABIP for his career, but its worth noting that Bellhorn never came close to repeating his 2004 numbers. For most of his career he was a backup at best. Ellsburry will likely be an every day CF for a contender for several years.

At what point do we revisit this discussion?

He should not start another game the rest of the year.

he should definitely be the odd man out in the crowded outfield

Crisp over Ellsbury right now. That said, he's still good enough to be a very decent 4th OF so he should be playing in games as a reserve and occasional starter.

When (if?) Drew comes back, the starting OF should be:

LF - Bay, CF - Coco, RF - Drew

At least while Coco is still hot. The first guy off the bench, who can play all 3 positions, is Kotsay. Ellsbury is the 5th OF who should only go in to PR late in a playoff game. If he's PR'ing for an OF, you can leave him in for defense if necessary. Otherwise, he's just in the game for his legs.

Like I said last night' date=' Ellsbury can play like s*** May - August if he plays like this in September/October.[/quote']

Exactly. Besides .280 and 50 SB in his first full year isn't too shabby anyways.

the way I see it, Ellsbury went through the growing pains of every rookie. He comes in, absolutely rakes cause pitchers don't know how to pitch him. Once they get the book on him (pitch inside cause he has a long swing), it's up to him to make the adjustment. He made the adjustment (no more leg kick, hence a shorter swing) at the right time

Pedroia had to make adjustments as well. The fact that he made them prooves hes a good hitter. Jacoby seems like he is coming along nicely. Hes starting to show some of his pop and drive the ball.

These 2 are going to be a big time 1,2 punch for a long time.

damn near every rookie comes to a point where they're forced to make adjustments and fix their weaknesses to become a solid major leaguer who can be counted on to hit for average. Pedroia did that, it looks like Jacoby is doing it now and now Lowrie is gonna have to figure it out
