Only two of my Sox, Joe Crede and Carlos Quentin, made the roster.

My White Sox bretheren and I will make sure there's a third.

I guess that says a lot about Varitek that the players' date=' not the fans, voted him in.[/quote']

See my comments in the Jason Varitek thread. I wholeheartedly support the inclusion of Tek on the roster.

Tek should be no where near all star game - but so should not be Jeter.

From Keith Law:

Jason Varitek over various multicellular organisms capable of wearing a catcher's mitt

Is it more of an insult to the All-Star Game to put someone playing as horribly as Varitek is on the AL roster, or to Varitek himself by drawing even more presumably unwanted attention to his hitting woes?

Varitek

Varitek has been so bad at the plate this season that he's below replacement level for catchers -- that theoretical player who any team could grab from Triple-A to fill that roster spot. And it's not as if Varitek is a perennial All-Star who fans would expect to see in the game; he hasn't made the squad at all since 2005 (and hasn't deserved to), and only appeared in one other All-Star Game before that, in 2003.

The obvious alternative here would be A.J. Pierzynski, who is hitting reasonably well and is having a season comparable to his 2006 season, the last year he made an All-Star team. The players could also have chosen Ivan Rodriguez, who is having a good enough year in a weak crop of AL catchers, has made 14 All-Star teams and is one of the most recognizable names in the game.

Jason Varitek should give up his roster spot for Pierzynski.
You guys know that the White Sox' campaign to get Pierzynski elected a few years ago was? "Punch A.J." :D .

All thanks to Michael Barrett.

At least it was the players that voted in Tek. The players don't give props to undeserving players. They know what it takes to play the game and they know what a guy brings to the table. The players' vote was a tremendous sign of respect for Varitek. The adoring fans voted in Jeter who was named as the most over rated player by his peers-- not exactly a sign of respect. Why should Jeter be on the team? He has a lower OBP than Lugo and 5 SBs to Lugo's 11. Jeter has always had a way of backing into the All Star game. When the stuffing of the ballot box by the adoring fans wasn't enough, Clueless Joe would bring 4 or 5 Shortstops or however many it would take to bring him. Because Clueless Crooked Joe flagrantly disregarded better players to bring his boys, Baseball had to take most of the discretion away from the managers. The low point was the year when ARod, Nomar, Tejada and Vizquel were all having clearly better years than Jeter. Joe brought 5 SS so he could bring Jeter. Five Shortstops? Ridiculous.

It could be all the AL pitchers thanking him.

Jose Molina is more deserving than Tek this year. Just plain terrible.

Sorry to be a bit off topic but with Ortiz no participating any chance Mike Lowell takes his spot?

Should be Giambi, Dye, or Longoria ahead of Lowell.

Cal Ripken Jr. was a first ballot HOF, who will be remembered as a baseball icon. People who don't even watch the sport know who Cal Ripken is. He has endorsement deals, even though he's been retired for years.

Jason Varitek? Casual fans know who he is, but he is no icon.

Other than the fact that they have played baseball, those two really don't warrant any type of comparison.

I think you're geting the two Orioles players confused. Roberts is on the list' date=' Markakis is not.[/quote']

good call my b.

I can't believe Markakis isn't an all-star. I guess I couldn't think of anybody to take off in his place though.
