New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez is considering retirement after this season, according to the New York Daily News.

The veteran right-hander cited concerns over his 78-year-old father's failing health. Pablo Martinez is currently suffering from a form of brain cancer.

"It's taking a toll on me and my family, my dad's situation," Martinez told the Daily News. "I haven't been there for them. I just realized that between last year and this year, I haven't been there for my family, my parents.

"That'll probably drag me away from the game a little sooner than people expect."

The 36-year-old Martinez, who is currently rehabbing an injured left hamstring at the Mets' minor league facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida, plans to make a final decision after the season.

"After this season, I'm going to go back home and think about it and I'm going to decide," Martinez added.

A three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star, Martinez is in the final season of a four-year deal he signed with the Mets after helping the Boston Red Sox capture a World Series championship in 2004.

Martinez, who has a sterling 209-93 career record with a 2.81 earned run average in parts of 17 big league seasons, is expected back shortly by the Mets.

I think he just wants out of New York.

I doubt he thought the Mets would be in 4th place and that the Marlins would be at the top. But that's baseball.

well, his gimpy ass actually being in the rotation could probably change that a bit

Well I guess those were just rumors:

FROM ESPN - Pedro Martinez, who returned to the Dominican Republic to be with his sick father, said Wednesday that he plans to stick around for at least two more seasons.

"I feel great physically and for the record I haven't considered retirement. Retirement would only take place if my arm is badly hurt and if I have to face surgery or something near that nature," Martinez told ESPNdeportes.com while visiting his father, Pablo Jaime, who has a form of brain cancer.

You know, we'll never see a 1999 Pedro Martinez, EVER again. I consider him to be the most dominant pitcher of our time, and probably the cleanest. I even watched him when he was with the Expos.

I think if it wasn't for his injuries, he probably coudl reach atleast 250 wins. But with his recent issues I don't see that happening. Regardless, the man is going to the Hall of Fame.

Truth to be told, I'd rather see him retire now, ahead of the game, instead of doing what Roger Clemens has down with his several retirements and reappearances.

Then again you never know, he may comeback strong and have a decent season.

we lost a ton of swagger when petey went to flushing and it took josh beckett a couple of years to get it back

the best pitcher i have ever seen in my life albeit over a limited time frame

imagine if duke gave him a legit #2 rather than the john burketts and david cones washed up asses?

the man was never the same after the 99 allstar game but he carried an auro of invincibility and confidence each time he walked out there

i compare him to marvin hagler, another of the few men i cherished watching over the years and 1 of a few i called a hero of mine along with ali

its the best thing for moss and i hope for hansen too.

these guys were going nowhere fast with boston, look at murphy in texas,a guy who we gave away for that perrenial allstar eric gagne.

15 .275 74 64 7

not bad at all....

jd drew is hitting 283 with 19-60....in about 30 less ab's but murphy is now on the dl.

theres a very fine line between mlb and AAA and oppurtunity can be a problem

he has been god awful this yr and if I were him, I'd consider retiring too. If he doesnt rehab and get a few mph on his fastball, he's done. His curve doesnt break anymore, the circle sits flat and he was throwing 83-84mph the start i saw him throw.

pedro got nothing left, its painfully evident watching him walk pirate hitters

he went a month without walking 4 guys when he was on,there aint 4abs in a pitt game that should make him feel the need to be carefull,no confidence in himself anymore

He's given up 1 earned run in 6 innings. Our studs Lester and Dice-K didn't fare that well against the Little League A's.

and the Mets bullpen proceeded to crap the lead away

actually peteys last few efforts have been...i dunno, respectable comes to mind.

but he is no longer an 8 figure a year pitcher and if he does come back next year he will be pitching for less than 1/3 of what hes making today,i dont know if his ego can handle that or if his body is willing to accept the burden....hes a 90 pitch per game guy now and he is also a guy who needs the 1st 20 pitches to warm up

Lester 2 runs in 7 innings is a 2.57 ERA

Matsuzaka 2 runs in 6 innings is a 3.00 ERA

Pedro 1 run in 6 innings is a 1.50 ERA

Who did better?

Wow, SSS much?

This is the same Pedro that's pretty much got smacked around all year?

The point I was making was that it was a little silly to beat up on Pedro for an outing when he gave up 1 run in 6 innings. No comparison was being made to Lester's and Dice K's work for the entire year. I'll take 6 innings and 1 run on just about any night from our starters.

In Pedro's last two starts he's totaled 12.1 innings and giving up 4 runs (3 earned). Sadly because of the bullpen, he got the loss for one and a no decision.

I think the bullpen can somtimes make the starter look worse than he really is. I think Pedro's doing all right for now. And I agree with you, a 6 inning 1 run game from any starter, is good enough for me.

pedro is in the last year of a 52,000,000.00 contract in which he has compiled 30 wins.
