Kevin Cash appears to be the leading candidate for the backup job. He is worse than Belli at the plate.

What about Dusty Brown?

If Kottaras made some strides at the end of the yr, they will do him a serious disservice by having him start once every 5 days. He needs to prove he can be a starter in the minors first. I can see a gradual handing over the power starting next yr (akin to Girardi and Posada where they split the duty and then Posada took the reigns.)

too bad doug's bat speed is too slow, he can sure handle wake. I think cash will improve with more at bats, and he seemed to handle wake quite well in 2007 when needed

Wake and Mirabelli were a tandem for all but 5 starts. In those 5 starts, Wake allowed 17ER in 26.2IP. Without those numbers....

Wake had a 4.60ERA with Belli

Wake had a 5.73ERA without Belli

And over the past few yrs, the numbers have been worse. With Wake now being counted on more than ever, this is quite a gamble.

It's been shown in the past that Wake's on/off nature can lead to some pretting damning numbers for those that happen to catch him for a spot start or two. Conclusively shown. I'm not digging the thread up, but it's there. Somewhere.

I get this image in my mind of a kid who falls for the glued down quarter trick. You know, where the kid is picking away at the quarter only to realize some time later that it isn't coming up. Only now, imagine that the kid keeps falling for the trick. Over and over again. He picks at it every time, but he never gets the quarter. That's Jacko with the Mirabelli / Wake connection.

FWIW, is it even mildly surprising that the only catcher with a somewhat representative sample has Wake performing at right about his career average? Who'da thunk it?

Yes, but the overwhelming reason for that was BABIP. Wakefield's BABIP allowed with Mirabelli was .274, while with Cash it was .338. That can happen in small sample sizes, but it's not going to happen over a whole season--Wakefield's BABIP will probably regress to his norm, between .261 and .285 the past three seasons.

Never mind all that! I just read that Buchholz is dating Erica Ellyson! Do yourself a favor. Search Google images for this lass. She was the Penthouse Pet of the year.

About time.

IMO - Cash caught Wakefield better than Belli last year - after he had some initial hick-ups.

Cash caught him for 2 7IP 0ER stints then Wake fell apart.

BTW, I would LOVE to see the factual backing for ORS comments. Since for the most part, Wake has been MUCH worse over the past 3 yr when caught by anyone but Belli. The numbers bear it out in spades. But denial is a nice way to go. One by one that rotation shall fall...

Over the past 3 yrs...

Wake's performance without Belli...

93.1IP 58ER for an ERA of 5.59

Wake's performance with Belli...

461IP 218ER for an ERA of 4.25

But the numbers bear it out, right? Yeah, that would be wrong.

For once, you Red Sox fans and us Yankee fans can agree on one thing.

Her curve is much better than his.

It's amazing what one no-hitter can get you.

Oh great. I googled her and yes is very, very hot...too hot, potentially, for this young kid. Hope he can handle it without losing his focus.

FYI, I clicked on her web-page...holy crap! lesbo pics, toys, etc. Better clean my web site history.

wow. Wakefield is still on the team, right? Wake is terrible without Belli.

Cash did a very commendable job catching for Wakefield. Plus at 32 he is more durable than the soon to be 38 year old Mirabelli. The only negative is that he is an actual downgrade in offense

Wake's back started to act up on him at the end of the year...

Like I said, I'm not digging it up. I think it was last offseason where you made a big deal about Varitek potentially having to catch Wake, and you brought up a 4 or 5 game stretch when Tek caught him. Of course, you didn't look at the 4 games prior and after. I did, and the trend showed that the worm had turned prior to Tek catching him, and he didn't get better until a couple of games after Mirabelli returned. In other words, Wake's streakiness had nothing to do with who was catching him. Just like it's unlikely to matter this year. Especially since Cash is a superior defensive catcher.

Keep your fingers crossed for our rotation to fall, a-hole. Oh and BTW, IT'S ONLY MARCH!

Hope Dougie just calls it a career and finishes with the Sox. Even with all his faults, you have to admit, you could tell Dougie really did Love playing for the Red Sox.

so the entire 3 yr span that I just showed you can be explained by "the worm turning". Arent you a sabremetric nut? Does Bill James preach about a turning of a worm?

Lets just say, for a second here, that Wakefield meets his career averages in the middle. He isnt quite as bad as he was without Belli, but he isnt quite as good as he was with Belli due to the loss of Doug and age factoring in. That leaves him with an ERA right around 5. Is a hot/cold knuckleballer with an ERA around 5 going to be a boon to your team when right now he is being counted on as a #3?

Lets just say, for a second here, that you made one post, just one, that wasn't a Red Sox doomsday scenario or a MFY pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Would that constitute the breaking of the seventh seal?
