On M&MD, the Twins wanted 1 of two packages...

Hughes, Melky, and 2 MiLB players

or

Wang, Melky, and 1 MiLB player.

I'd say no to both as well. Hughes has been dynamite this ST too. Good work Cash.

Oh my God dude. Do you believe everything you read?

I hear you are studying to be a doc, which means you must be on the more intelligent side of average.

Does it make any sense that this is what the Twins would take and then not counter-offer when the Yankees said no, and then accept what the Mets gave them? Get real.

Wow after 6 innings of spring training Phil Hughes has won the CY Young and brought the Yanks their 27th world title.

Holy crap

If that is true, and I'm not saying it is, I think it's laughable that the Yankees declined the second offer.

Agreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed.

Me too. I see a pretty significant regression from Wang this year. Certainly won't be a #1 pitcher, probably not even a strong 2. And in that kind of deal, Melky has to be expendable. But hey, whats past is past.
Posted
Sure he won 38 games the last two years, but he pitched bad in the playoffs. He's going to be a s***** #2 starter at best this year.

He isnt a 1. He is a 2. He's won more games than anyone over the past 2 yrs and has been very consistent. He just isnt the lights out ace that a team with our payroll should have. He'll still be the 15-20 game winner with a sub 4 era that he's been for 2 yrs now. He just isnt a guy who you could toss in front of a playoff rotation that has him as their best pitcher. If he headed a deep rotation, then he'd be fine. The past couple yrs, the rotation has been top heavy. If Hughes and Kennedy pitch well behind Pettitte and Wang, we'll have a good rotation.

PECOTA' date=' which is most accurate, says this for Wang's 08 season: 4.37 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 95 K/59 BB in 178 1/3 IP.[/quote']

What was it going into last year?

11-9 W/L 4.35 ERA 1.42 WHIP, 74 K/48 BB in 178.3 IP

I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

So are you saying that you would or wouldn't have done Santana for Wang, Melky, and a MiLBer?

A few days after the deal with the Mets went down I heard the Twins last ditch effort to get the Yanks involved was asking for Wang, Melky, Horne (I believe, if my memory serves me well), and another prospect. Either way, the opportunity to acquire Johan Santana without giving up Phil Hughes shouldnt have been passed up. Its all good though, I don't mind not taking on the $ and holding on to my homeboy Melky Cabrera.
