Does anyone have an ESPN Insider subscription? (I'm too cheap for the insider BS)

One of the headlines in their Rumor Central section says:

"Papelbon contract talks at standstill"

and the other one says:

"Papelbon, agents meet with Sox"

What's the deal with this? Can anyone post a summary of the article?

Thanks

It's a tough situation. 900k doesn't seem like much, but it sets a precedent whereby every pretty good rookie or second year player can demand that the Sox owners pay them immediately.

I'd give it to him and hope that another pitcher comes along with a career 1.62 ERA, .921 WHIP, and 193K/160.7 IP, with 72 SV in basically 2.5 seasons.

It's tough not to give it to him when Hansen make $1 million.

Boras cut a better deal for Hansen upon his signing. :dunno:

It's possible that Papelbon has refused a multi-year contract deal and that the FO won't give him much over MLB minimum without his discussing his arb years. It's also possible that the FO knows that Papelbon's arm is hanging by a figurative thread, and that they figure that it all won't matter soon enough.

I know that, when I researched his season-ending situation back in 2006, the odds didn't look good for his career. :(

According to MLB.com there's no talk of hold outs or anything. He's talking about what he wants in vague comments to the press.

"It's a tough situation for me right now because, basically, I'm at a point to where I feel like the position I'm in, there's a certain standard that needs to be put in place here," Papelbon said of looking for a long-term contract.

"We can move on, but at the same time, I feel a certain obligation, not only to myself and my family to make the money that I deserve, but for the game of baseball.

He claims to be ready to play regardless of what happens.

The Sox are working within the framework of the agreemenat reached with MLBPA. Now all of a sudden the Sox have to go beyond that, when the reverse would be unthinkable. It seems to me Paps should not be invoking Rivera's name until he gets many years of success under his belt. There is a structure to this and it rewards players who can succeed over a number of years. Paps needs to accept that, work at it and speak up when it is his turn.

Papelbon is speaking like a little bitch, as if he is being dissed by the Sox because they are following the status quo. Im sure the Sox already marked down when to speak with him about possible extensions when the arbitration process begins. The Guardians locking up Sizemore and the Rockies with Tulowitzki (each 6 year deals) after their first official season could have set a precedent

Thanks.

I believe that Cole Hamels and Prince Fielder have made similar requests and their respective teams do not want to set the precedent of breaking initial contracts to enter into long-term deals.

Sox should sign Papelbon to a 4 or 5 yr deal. They would get 3 arb yrs and either 1 or 2 yrs of his FA yrs. 6-700K this season, 900K next, 2.0 3rd, 3.5M 4th, 5M for the 5th. Roughly a 12M deal. Maybe add a couple option yrs to the end. I don't think its outrageous.

Its a nice deal for both sides, Papelbon makes some coin and the Sox get a CP at a decent cost controlled cost.

I know Corpas is no Papelbon but hes a comparable at this point,

Manny Corpas rhp

4 years/$8.025M (2008-11), plus 2012, 2013 club options

re-signed 2/28/08

$0.2M signing bonus

08:$0.575M, 09:$0.75M, 10:$2.75M, 11:$3.5M, 12:$6M club option ($0.25M buyout), 13:$8M club option ($0.5M buyout)
