Wow, is he really bringing that kind of heat? This is really looking to be a great scrap heap pick up by Theo. The pressure is on wake and buchholz to put up quality innings, cause Colon is going to take that 5 spot.

Went 5 strong today in Pawtucket only allowing 1 hit and 1 BB with 5 Ks and no ERs. Fastball topped out at 96' date=' final pitch was 95.[/quote']

He hasnt thrown that hard in a few years now. Even in his CY Young year he was lower than that, but his stuff was a little better (claimed he learned how to pitch with less heat) I wonder how accurate those readings are. Im thrilled he can still get it up there, but im cautiously optimistic. Either way......I think he will add something to the team, unlike Wade Miller a few years back.

i saw wade millers only victory in a sox uni against the braves on a friday night.

colons a small investment with huge potential

imagine getting 150ip of 4.00 era ball from this guy?

what a gigantic boost that would be.

After Lester's last start, I think he (lester) is ahead of Bucholz......Wakefield is not going to battle anyone for a spot, hes earned it and there is no reason to panic with him after a few bad starts, as we've grown accustomed to the results he gives us. Unless he gets hurt, which seems likely at some point this year.

I really have to think that Colon is going to be a major part of the rotation, they are really pushing the guy hard, and almost all reports have been outstanding. Hitting mid to high 90s already in his road to recovery? Impressive to say the least. At the very worst, why cant we have Clay pick up some solid innings in AAA and then use him in a role like the Yankees did with Joba last year (IM NOT COMPARING THEM!!!!!) At first they let Joba get his feet wet, and we all know what happened from there. Just a thought, especially with the concerns growing over Timlins timetable, and what he will actually be able to provide.

bucholz has to get a chance to start

the guy threw a no no last year and had an era under 2 in his limited appearances

give him a pop,if he aint getting it done then we got bad bart on the blackstone river waiting to go.

lester is a gamer

i just want him to bring a similar effort against teams with payrolls bigger than my 7 man department...

i do like him and love the concept of an effective lefty in the fold and also agree that he is very likely ahead of bucholz in the rotation.

wow hold on there he might be bringing the heat but that does not mean he can get the job done. i hear he was a bit inconsistent with his command and thats against minor leaguers. in the major there is not much room for error so lets see how this plays out first

he also pulled an oblique and will miss at least one start.

Colon will be inconsistent, that is the nature of the injury. His FB was always straight as an arrow and we lit him up like a Christmas tree. His biggest calling card was how well he threw his curveball off of his FB. If he truly is throwing mid to high 90s again, then the questions that you need to know are..

A. Is he locating well enough to be effective

B. Is he locating his curve

If both A and B are yes, then he is a steal. If not, he might have the velocity, but he wont be very useful.

If he is healthy and throwing mid-90's, he will be better than anyone in the Yankee rotation, but he'll be the Sox 4th or 5th starter.

Colon was decent in his first rehab start since coming back from the DL. 3 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 2 K's and no walks. It is encouraging to hear that he topped out at 97 MPH, although who knows how accurate the gun was

Good news. The gun's gotta be accurate within 2-3 mph.

Great new avatar! :D

Great news today from Bartolo. He went 6 innings (64 pitches) allowing 0 runs, 1 hit, no walks and struck out 4. I'm really starting to like this move to bring Colon in and with the way he is progressing, he could pitch some big games for us this year.:D

EDIT: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Bartolo%20Colon&pos=P&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=112526

Here are Colon's numbers to date from AAA

I don't think with numbers like that his stay at AAA is going to be too lengthy. sixteen days is time enough for two starts in the minors and a call up prior to the deadline. I don't think they will need to renegotiate.

I think he is REALLY going to help us out. I'm excited. Come back player of the year candidate for sure.

Someone on SOSH mentioned that Michael Felger mentioned Bartolo Colon is going to be making Tuesdays start for the Red Sox. He didn't mention who mentioned that to him. Mention mention mention. Colon Tuesday, woo hoo. He keeps pounding the zone, even if he is on a leash he should get through 6 and let the colon era begin already

I cant wait for all of the double-entendre filled headlines when he wins or loses:

Colon Strong as Wang Gets Dumped

Even after yesterday’s impressive outing for Triple-A Pawtucket, Bartolo Colon is still one more start away from a major league call-up.

That means the Red Sox [team stats] will look to other in-house solutions - David Pauley and Charlie Zink are two Triple-A possibilities - to fill the open starter’s spot in the rotation Tuesday against the Royals.

A decision and announcement are expected from the Sox tonight.

Moral - Don't trust Felger.

Almost as good as April 30, 2005, with Wang up against Bush.

Wang came through:

Edit:

Zink? They're thinking of bringing up Zink?

I would absolutely love to see that. The MLE of a AA or AAA knuckleball pitcher is his actual stat line: MLB batters are no better at hitting knuckleballs than AA or AAA batters. Zink's career MiLB ERA is 4.26--he might have MLB-caliber stuff, and we'll never know unless he gets a chance.

Can they renegotiate the June 1 date like they did with the May 1 one?

I'm sure they can but the original date was extended due to his injury. But considering his recent results, if Colon sees no window to make the big club by June 1st, I'm sure he'd leave cause there are a ton of teams who would love to add him to their rotation right now

well' date=' they have 16 days to call him up or he's gone[/quote']

EEI reported that he may start on Tuesday vs. KC

EDIT: just saw sushi posted this 8 hour ago.

Stuff ya hope you never here the announcers say:

"Colon is open and receptive to his teammates"

"Wang is working hard inside"

"Colon is earning his money with that backdoor curveball"
