This past week, Baseball America posted it's lists of top prospects. Here's how they measure what the Sox have:

1. Clay Buchholz, rhp

2. Jacoby Ellsbury, of

3. Lars Anderson, 1b

4. Justin Masterson, rhp

5. Jed Lowrie, ss

6. Ryan Kalish, of

7. Michael Bowden, rhp

8. Nick Hagadone, lhp

9. Oscar Tejeda, ss

10. Josh Reddick, of

I was a little surprised that Buchholz was above the somewhat more proven Ellsbury, but I suppose the pitcher gets the extra push.

BA always overestimates tools and underestimates skills and injury risks. Few future stars are missed by BA, but many BA top picks wash out.

Ellsbury is likely to have a better total MLB career value than Buchholz. Buchholz has a higher ceiling, along with a higher injury risk. BA, of course, puts Buchholz first.
