The baseball from the final out of the 2007 World Series is at Jonathan Papelbon's home in Hattiesburg, Md., according to the Hattiesburg American.

Well, part of it is.

The rest? You should ask the Boss.

If he could talk, he might say it was delicious. But the most he'll say is "woof."

"Boss," you see, is Jonathan Papelbon's dog. Boss likes to play with baseballs. And Boss found the baseball that Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek gave the closer after he struck out the Rockies' Seth Smith to clinch Boston's second World Series title in four years, the newspaper reported.

"My dog ate it," Papelbon told the newspaper. "He plays with baseballs like they are his toys. His name is Boss. He jumped up one day on the counter and snatched it. He likes rawhide. He tore that thing to pieces.

"I'll keep what's left of it," he told the paper.

That is priceless!

Jeez, Thump, you'll pretty much believe anything if you happen to like the guy, huh? First Pete Rose is a paragon of honesty, and now you'll believe the "dog ate my homework" story. Ever think that's a rather cherished piece of memorabilia?

Sorry if I'm not as cynical as you'd like me to be. So what if I believe it? Does it make THAT big a deal? Am I questioning you as to why you wouldn't believe it? If it turns out to be a gag, okay ha ha, got me. But really come on you have nothing else better to do than to come after me over THIS. That's just sad.

well so then exactly what happened to the ball? is he simply keeping it? or you guys think he's just messing with the media? I actually bought the "dog ate the ball" story.

honestly , as long as he keeps pitching like he has been , I couldn't care less if he's telling the truth or not about this

If it turns out as a gag, I'll laugh. This is something I'd expect Papelbon to do, he's crazy like that. I wouldn't be surprised if Varitek egged him to do it too!

You guys should see the way Yankee fans believe in Clemens in their message board - almost fundamentally.

That is sad. Even I can admit that, and I LOVE the guy. You'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger Clemens supporter than myself.

The dog story is great though. I came across the article online and first thought was to come here to see the response

Absolutely Priceless.

Paps saying that his dog ate the ball is like clemens saying he didn't take steriods . its all BS

Papelbon is a certified window licker, there is no doubt in my mind that the story is true.

Oh you are cynical, but it has nothing to do with the issue at hand. No, for you it depends on whether or not you like the guy. Clemens you can't stand, so naturally he's a lying douche. Rose you like, so you'll drink up whatever he says about his gambling (despite previous lies).

This is no different. You like Papelbon, so you take exception to those that question the veracity of this story. Personally, I could care less. Didn't care about Monkey-Bitch either. It's just a ball. That doesn't remove the fact that to some this is a valued commodity, and the '04 fiasco provided motivation for someone who wanted to keep it to fabricate a story that would essentially make it unavailable.

So now it's a crime to have faith in people you like and to have some form of trust in a person? And yeah, I like Papelbon... you don't? If you don't belive the story, so be it that's your God given right. But why come down on me because I believe it? Soley because I follow those I like? Isn't that the situation in life? You follow people you like? And it doesn't always depend on whether I like someone or not. For example, I don't like Derek Jeter, I don't. But if someone came out saying he took steroids, I wouldn't believe it. I don't think he'd do steroids. So really, lay off of me, it's getting annoying.

And off the record is that Andy Kaufman in your avatar?

Thumper, when your opinion of a person impacts your ability to look at the facts, then you are a fanboy. My opinion of Papelbon doesn't matter, nor should yours. And spare me your hypothetical about Jeter. To date, we've yet to see you come down someone you like or give benefit of doubt to someone you don't like. It is what it is.

No, that's not Andy Kaufman. It's Monty Python, from a skit where they are learning self-defense and the instructor will only teach them how to defend themselves against attackers armed with fresh fruit. Cleese is the instructor. Chapman, Idle, Jones, and Palin are the students. Idle keeps asking him, over and over, "What about a man armed with a pointed stick?" It kind of stuck with me.

I like Curt Schilling but I'd wish he'd shut up sometimes. I can't stand J.D. Drew, but I think he'll improve this coming season. I hate Jason Giambi, but I respect him for coming clean on steroids. Does that count?

Regardless, why does what I think matter so much to you? Really WHY must you come after me and what I think? Because I don't agree with you? My opinion of Papelbon would be the same should this story be true or not, he's a crazy beast, nothing more to it. Really, what's going on in your head that makes it matter so much what I choose to believe? Aren't we all intitled to our own opinions and thoughts? So if all you're going to do is repeat yourself, call me a fanboy, then I'm done arguing this, it's worthless.

Why are you here? It's a message board, a place to put your thoughts out there for others to read. If you are so sensitive that some negative feedback is going to cause you this much discomfort, why not just happily sit at home and keep those thoughts to yourself?

What you think doesn't matter to me, not one bit. But if you are going to put it out there, then accept the fact that some people may have criticisms of your thought process. What you do with those criticisms is your decision, but please afford me the same "entitlement of expression" that you feel I am threatening. Or is really not about the right to opinion, and you just want people to agree with everything you say?

In this discussion? No. In none of those situations are you being asked to believe what someone has said.

Thumper, you better leave before ORS comes back with the holy hand grenade.

It has nothing to do with everyone having to agree with me. I've already said, people are entitled to their opinions, and YES even YOU can have your criticsm about what I think. To be more specific I just think you're taking it further than it needs to go. I understand you wish to debate my thoughts, and by all means go for it, it's good to have a conversation. As said, I think you're just taking it to uneeded extremes is all.

You didn't see me jump on redsoxrules when he called it BS. Why do you have to jump on me? All I'm saying is you could be a little more decent about it instead of putting a lamp to my face.

That's my original post. That is unnecessarily getting on your case? That is my opinion with some relevant history from yesterday's discussion on "believability" and a possible motive for a fabricated story.

Lighten up, Francis.[/sgt. Hulka]
