Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor was shot at his home Monday and was in critical condition, and police are investigating a possible robbery.

Officers were sent to Taylor's home at about 1:45 a.m. after his girlfriend called 911 and said he was shot in his lower body, Lt. Nancy Perez said. He was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, she said, but did not disclose how many times he was shot.

Richard Sharpstein, an attorney who represented Taylor in a criminal case, said the player's father told him his son had been shot in the leg and there was much bleeding because the femoral artery was severed.

Richard Sharpstein, who has represented Sean Taylor in legal matters in the past and is a friend of the family, said moments ago that the player's life is hanging in the balance in the hospital. Sharpstein, speaking from the hospital, said Taylor is "nonresponsive and unconscious" and the doctors are "worried about a possible brain injury or death."

Sharpstein, who has been with Taylor's family at the hospital much of the day, said that there are major worries that Taylor may have lost oxygen to the brain, and that no other procedures are planned for right now. "They're waiting to see if he comes to," Sharpstein said. He was shot in the groin/thigh area near the femoral artery and lost copious amounts of blood. The intruders then retreated and Sean was airlifted to the trauma center and endured several hours of surgery, Sharpstein said.

Taylor is in intensive care, Sharpstein said, and his girlfriend and child were not injured in the attack. Sharpstein said Taylor was sleeping when he heard a noise in the living room. The intruder or intruders were at his bedroom and Taylor reached for a machete or other form of knife he keeps nearby in case of emergency, and two shots were fired, with one striking his leg.

"Right now he's clinging to life and we're all praying he makes it," Sharpstein said.

Sharpstein said there have been numerous break ins, or break in attempts, on Taylor's house in recent weeks.

Right now, they're still running with the burglary story.

I got suckered in by the first Chris Benoit stories, that everyone thought it was a gas leak, so I'll wait and see if the burglary story is true.

Agreed. Regardless, even should Taylor have had some sort of influence in his own death, it's sad that someone so young who had so much going for him would get tangled up in a mess that eventually took everything away.

Sounds like a lot of athletes that I can think of these days. Maybe they don't lose it all by dying, but a lot of them do stupid things, get into trouble, and ruin their careers. It really is sad.

Since I know someone will take my message the wrong way, I'll make it clear that I'm not saying whether or not I know that Taylor influenced this shooting.

he was born in florida city where his dad was police chief

that place is nasty,a nasty ass town full of farm picking immigrants from mexico and the carribean

the worst thing about florida city is most of its population ended up homeless after hurricane andrew in 92...that didnt befall the taylors but it turned an otherwise brutal community into the wild west.

if you look at the florida map go to miami then look for the keys

the last town in dade county is florida city before you hit monroe county and key largo

was it a woman?

or could it have been dope??

i dont know

it was probabaly a simple b@e gone bad but its another dead black kid just the same
