damn! I know he's in the NL but I wish we could of gotten him

I'd rather have ellsbury and lester.

We'll see him once every 3 years now. Looks like a win to me.

Plus our rotation remains better than the Yankees.

Couldn't agree with you more. I kinda saw this one coming as soon as they said that the Mets were also interested. But like it was said before he's going to the N.L not the Yankees and that's all that matters.

And someone please close this damn thread. We kept our prospects, Yankees did not get him, he is out of AL. We win.

Edit - Let him beat the Yankees in subway series - oh this is sweet.

We both win. If you had gotten him, we'd be looking at the wildcard at best for the next 3-4 years.

It is now obvious that the Red Sox never really wanted Santana. They pulled Lester off the table when the Yankees pulled out of the race for Santana.

The big losers here? Twins. They turned down the Yankees offer of Hilligoss [sp], Cabrera, Hughes, and Marquez. The talent level between what the Yankees offered and what the Mets gave up is laughable.

Cashman got what he wanted, Theo got what he wanted, and Minaya got what he wanted. The Twins are the only real loser in this deal.

P.S. If the Yankees don't make the playoffs or if Hughes sucks up the joint, Cashman should be fired, and jacksonianmarch should be banned for life from this site.

Nice 'win' for the Sox. They played their hand perfectly and really came out on top here. The Yankees did offer a very nice package and the Sox counter offers were enough to keep that deal from happening. Meanwhile, we are now assured of getting to watch Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz (along with Justin Masterson, Jed Lowrie, and Ryan Kalish) all develop as Red Sox for a bit longer.

ah well, as long as the Yankees didn't get him

I think they just wanted to get Santana out of AL.

I think they chose not having to have Santana come back to burn them over the best prospects for their team which is quite a stupid way of running a team

This is a win for all involved IMO. The Mets' window is closing, so they needed to get a now player. The Yankees and Sox have good young talent and a mix of young and old that didnt necessarily need a high priced ace while draining the farm of high level young talent.

This is absolutely a win for all involved. He's not at the top of the Boston rotation, we still have Hughes and Melky, and he's still ended up in New York. This is huge for the Mets and their fanbase, especially considering Minaya's lack of action this offseason. It'll be fun to watch him anchor that staff and bring them straight to the postseason (hopefully..unless they find a way to blow it like last year) while not having to worry about having to face him in the AL.

The great thing for the Mets is that Santanna at 85% in the NL is still probably a 17 game winner. I mention this because I've always said that signing Johan to a 6/7 yr deal is risky. I can see him holding strong in the NL. If he was pitching for the Sox or Yanks, I think the toll on him would show faster.

Wow this was a very week trade on the twins part. Id even go as far as to call it a steal for the mets if Carlos Gomez or Deolis Guerra don't pan out which could happen - Carlos Gomez had a tough time at the plate and i have heard/read that Guerra doesnt have a good breaking ball or other 2ndary pitches other than his hard fast ball.

The Mets package may be weaker but they must be willing to pony up the cash. Good for them.

I heard on radio it is 5 years $100 million - if that's the case - I don't think Mets are shredding lot of cash. I have no clue why the twins did not accept the yanks or sox offer at gm meeting that was way better.

I won't be surprised if the twins GM is publicly executed in Metrodome by the fans if none of the prospects pan out and Hughes/ Ellsbury/Lester/Santana turns out to be big.

I have maintained from the beginning that he will be with the Twins when they break camp to come north. I'd be very surprised if he got traded. Shutdown aces are the rarest of commodities. You'd have to knock their sox off to get Santana.
I don't think it was a knock your socks off offer. I am very surprised. Twins fans must want to throw up.

A little observation YMMV.

Talked with lot of Yankee and Sox fans today. The Yankee fans are all saying victory for sox, Yanks and Mets. The Red Sox fans(including me) saying it sucks for the Yankees that they could not get it done as they have much better prospects to offer than the Mets. I checked the Yankee board - they seem to be deeply divided. Two opinions - we love our kids or we f***ed up.

Let's not forget that the yankees just took a big step back in the battle for New York.

How can you necessarily say that? The Mets haven't done s*** this offseason with the exception of a handful of moves here or there. The Yanks brought back everybody, brought in a new charismatic manager, have a solid core of young talent, and lets not forget which NY team appeared in last years postseason. I can't look at this as a negative for the Yankees, because showing that restraint and failing to give in and ship out solid young guys i squite something when it comes to the Yankees. If all the the actions of the Yankees organization were motivated by the actions/outcome of the Mets and/or Red Sox then we would all be f***ed. To an extent it was like that, but look where that got us....I think it's a win for the 3 east coast teams involved, and still a toss-up for the Twinkies.

Yeah, but Johan Santana makes the Mets that much better.

And I have always maintained that "charisma" in baseball isn't very important, if at all. I think it's BS.

I'll buy the young talent argument, but they have to pan out first.
