I can't help but think that last year might have been an abberation. I think there is a distinct chance that gagne would do better, but I beleive th real issue is he wants to be a closer. I don't think he'll accept arb.

I'd say there is an equal chance that the success he had last year BEFORE coming to Boston was the real abberation.

I remember Jim Palmer commenting during a game that he thought Gagne looked terrible and thought the numbers he was achieving were not representative of his shaky pitching. Based on what I saw, I agree.

Gagne trade must be the worst trade Theo has ever made ( trumps Arroyo and Meridith) - yeah don't jump on me saying that it looked like a great trade when it was done.

Gotta love revisionist history, huh?

Mirabelli for Bard and Meredith is easily his worst.

I think he has a shot to end up back in Texas.

As what? A Rodeo clown?

I can hear it now..."Eric Gagne was released from his rodeo clown job here in Dallas after 4 bullriders died while he was in the ring. All 4 riders represented very probable "save" situations, however Gagne was unable to convert. In his other 12 times in the ring, Gagne was virtually lights-out, leading to talk that several other rodeo circuits think he's worth a shot."

Said one rodeo analyst: "I think it was the pressure of clowning in the big rodeo market that got to him. He'll be fine in a place like Broken Arrow, Ok or Cheyenne, WY."

Mirabelli trumps Gagne if only because of the knee jerk reaction that it was. I like the WMP deal at first because if he ever learned how to stretch at bats he could've been another 40 homer guy in the lineup.

I was all for the Gagne trade and you couldn't really fault Theo for it though because on its surface it was almost a no-brainer. I remember going into work the next day and telling everyone how great it was because most of our games were going to end after the 6th inning.

The only thing I wonder is if some of the pieces that were dealt in that trade were still here how it'd affect the Santana deal.

IMO, that is cherry picking. Too many poor performances...and in some of those twelve "lights out" performances, as I recall, he looked shaky as well. Despite what the result was or what the numbers show in those 12 other performances, I can remember, while watching, him missing spots and getting lucky.

Was it the pressure of Boston? Late season fatigue? Varitek? Who knows, who cares, get him outta town.

How is taking every save opportunity on one side and every non-save opportunity on the other side cherry picking?

Suppose someone wrote, "Mike Lowell is a better hitter at Fenway, because he hits .373 at Fenway and only .276 on the road." Would you all that cherry-picking?

Eric Gagne had a very weird save vs. non-save split with Boston after his debacle in early August. While I appreciate that you watch the games, even in a small sample size the stats are compelling.

Its also worth mentioning that that same split also was apparent present in Texas. And by the way -

Going, going Gagne

The Rangers have announced that they are dropping out of the bidding for free agent Eric Gagne. While no specific reason was given, Jon Daniels said Thursday he hoped to have closure on some issues quickly. The Rangers were not willing to give Gagne two guaranteed seasons. Sounds like either the money demands for a one-year deal have gone beyond the Rangers' comfort zone or Scott Boras has told the Rangers he has a two-year offer on the table for Gagne. No word yet on how this will impact the Rangers' bullpen setup.

wrong choice of words I suppose. More directly...I've heard a number of people say he's worth a shot because of those games where he didn't implode...and I'm saying from what I saw, even in the games where he had some success, stat wise, he looked poor. i.e. Tek sets up outside, he throws inside, Ball should be down, but its up, pitch doesn't move but it gets popped up, etc.

Except that it was the other way around. ;)

Gagne had eight ER with Texas. Seven were in non-save situations.

For the love of god don't use the wrong choice of words or you'll get taken to the proverbial woodshed by the resident professor. I fear for you. I'm a little scared to even comment. Like The Mist I'll be banished to some bony fingered island eaten alive by mythical bugs....just for not understanding win-shares. And forever laughed at in a nightmarish Burger Meister-Meister-Burger manifesto.

He ain't worth a shot. I wanted to shoot him a couple of times this year. That would be accurate. Charles Whitman scenarios danced across my mind a few times. Mostly just ping Terry in the fibula as he signaled for him. Someone is going to think I'm serious here. I'll throw in the caveat...I'M JOKING. I hate caveats. It should be apparent. Calm down.

Anyway, closers have the shelf-life of the prom queens promise to screw you. It's not going to last past the first few shots of Jagr. Remarkable ones that are sustainable are few and far between and I think we have one. The fact the MFY's don't see that they have one AGAIN is awesome and I hope they continue to not see they have one. The real deals only come out once a decade or so at most. Plagues during playoff games less often. They are going to ruin that kid. 5 pitches, 3 pitches. Doesn't matter. Luckily our own guy knows who he is. A nut and perfect for that role. The frenchman can go wherever he would like....not on my mound thank you.

Eric Gagne declined Boston's offer of arbitration prior to Friday's deadline.

There were no big surprises among the choices of the free agents allowed to accept arbitration. Also declining were third baseman Alex Rodriguez (Yankees), outfielder Mike Cameron (San Diego), third baseman Pedro Feliz (San Francisco), RHP Livan Hernandez (Arizona), LHP Ron Mahay (Atlanta), LHP Trever Miller (Houston), DH Mike Piazza (Oakland), OF Aaron Rowand (Philadelphia), OF Shannon Stewart (Oakland) and RHP Luis Vizcaino (Yankees). Accepting were Andy Pettitte Yankees), Mark Loretta (Houston) and Michael Barrett (San Diego). Free agents who declined arbitration are allowed to continue negotiating with their former teams. Under the old CBA, they wouldn't have been allowed to sign major league deals with their former teams until May.

phew, now the Sox will have the 30th pick in the 1st round and a supplemental 1st rounder form the team that Gagne signs with

roto

A source told Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown that Eric Gagne and the Brewers are close to a one-year deal.

Doug Melvin kept saying Derrick Turnbow was his closer, but there was good reason for not believing him. Gagne will almost surely claim the job with a strong spring, making Turnbow and David Riske setup men. Ideally, Riske would pitch the eighth in most close games.

I was thinking the Brewers right when Cordero jumped to the Reds.

i thought we only got supp pick for Gagne because hes a B FA?

We do get a supplemental 1st rounder for losing Gagne. I was just saying what first 2 picks the Sox will have in the draft. They have the 30th pick in the 1st round because they had the best record in baseball last year
