JULIO f***ING LUGO!!!!! 8-6!

A win tonight clinches that playoff spot for the Sox.

Come on, Schilling, foregone conclusion. The real race, and has been for about two weeks now, is you and us for the division.

I like Tek the most. I can like a player, just not the uniform he wears. I like hard-nosed players who play the game, lead by example, and let it all out on the field. Jeter is our example. Tek is yours. I think most Red Sox fans, whether they care to admit it or not to others, admire Jeter. A lot of us admire Tek. I'm not ashamed to admit that.

As for the others, Manny, I just think he is the "Rain Man" of baseball, I am starting to really like Pedroia. I liked a lot of your old guys, Millar, Mueller, Damon. I can't stand Ortiz or Papelbon, they seem like whiners to me.

Right now, I really hate Lugo, lol. Nice shot, though.

Hm you don't like Ortiz? Really? That's strange. A lot of Yankees fans I know like him a lot. I will admit though he seems to challenge the strike zone a lot more this year.

I really like Matsui. I don't know why, but he plays the game the way it's supposed to be played. Last year when he broke his wrist and apologized for it? He's also just a good guy. I like Jeter, Rivera and Melky too. Some of the older Yankees I liked were Brosius and, obviously, Bernie. I know O'Neil was a great player, but to me it always seemed like he whined a lot.

Two great games today, one in the Bronx, one in Tampa. Congrats on making the playoffs Sox fans. Celebrate. You earned it.

Once again, congrats.

Congratulations on the playoff berth!

Was there any kind of celebration, or are they waiting to win the division?

they were definitely a little more jovial than usual. more of a scrum in the infield instead of the typical lining up to high-five each other

The race is foolish all together. The goal is to win the World Series and anyone that is happy with a division regular season winner is just dumb. There are 6 division winners a year so....who cares...there is only one World Series winner....I'm pumped lets get to October already......Yankees vs. Red Sox ALCS 2007 (I hope)

I gotcha.

I just heard on the post-game that they didn't pop any champagne or anything, obviously, but they had a toast behind closed doors. Not that anyone would expect to pop champagne after clinching a mere spot, lol.

Only crappy teams don't win the division :(

How many wild card teams have won the World Series? This year for example, the two best records are both in the NL West.

Oh, I know. I was just kidding because of what SOTK said about a "mere playoff spot".

Huzzah. 1st goal is reached' date=' that is making the playoffs. Goal 2 is the world series. I guess I call the division "Goal 1 1/2." Not necessary, but fun to have.[/quote']

not necessary but I have my pride. losing the division would hurt

Gom will tout the division as something significant because that backs his (and other Yankees fans) grandiosity about having won the AL East for such a long time. It is the fall back argument to not actually having won the WS during that time. Oh well. f*** it.

The Red Sox are in the playoffs. Hell yeah. First team to clinch a trip. Good victory to make it happen. Nice stuff.

Ellsbury DOES need to start in the playoffs. I am not sure where, but he should definitely be leading off.

The only reason I care about the division is that it gives us game 5 at home, and Wang has an era of 2.30 higher on the road than at home.

I could care less about the division otherwise. It's nice, but it's like drinking a wine cooler.

 I agree. It is making the playoffs that ultimately matters more than anything.

if we win the divison, it wont give us home field most likely. The angels are a game behind the Sox for the best record in the AL while the Guardians are tied. In order for us to take the division, most like both of those teams will pass the sox and we'd be the third seed. All the division would give us is home field vs the sox if we both make it to the ALCS.

What is interesting about this team is that there is no clear cut team that is the juggernaut here. The only team that had that title was ANA, but now their #2 pitcher is hurt, their lynchpin in their pen is sucking eggs and Vlade/Chone/Mathews Jr are injured. The Guardians have been a flawed team from the getgo, and to be honest, Carmona does not scare me in the playoffs. Remember how he did under pressure last season? Exactly. And with DMats reverting to normalcy, Schilling being unpredictable, and Manny pulling his yearly where in the world is Manny trick, the sox are by no means favorites either. And for the Yankees, the team with the hottest offense and bullpen (if you consider Mo, Joba and Viz the pen cause the other guys SUCK), it all falls to their pitching. Wang, Pettitte pray for rain. Again, flawed. Should be a fun playoff season.

"This one time, at band camp...."

So Carmona won't be an asset for the Tribe because he blew a couple of saves last year? Well, what does that mean for ARod in the playoffs? He's been horrible for two years straight. I think you'll find if you apply these moronic baseballisms appropriately to the entire Yankee roster, you can make a case for them getting no-hit for 3 straight games. I mean, I saw Melky strikeout 4 times in a game this year, so he won't get a hit, and I saw him give up an IPHR to Nixon on a misplayed ball two years ago, so he'll hurt you in the field, might as well leave him off the roster. Of course, I don't think any of these things have any bearing on what we'll see the week after next, but at least you gave us something to have fun with.

Actually Jacko, Ive seen Dice-K bounce back his last 2 starts. His start against the Yankees shouldve given him the W but as you know the 5 run lead in the 8th was blown easily. Then last night they had Dice-K at 100 pitches after 6 innings (they want rest & more confidence in himself), and the bullpen isnt at all worked hard, hand the ball to Delcarmen to start the 7th. It didnt help matters that Lopez hasnt been a lefty specialist. But oh well Sox won the game in grand fashion

Im not trying to jinx or even fool myself. But like in 2004 the Sox had 2 starters anchoring the staff, the ace Schilling and Pedro who started to revert to more of a finesse pitcher that he is now. Wakefield was Wakefield, but more concerning entering the playoffs was the season that Lowe had endured. Lowe only got to start because of the injury to Schilling and Id say he stepped up.

Right Field sounds good to me.

Drew cant be sat in the playoffs after he starts coming around with the power numbers. Id say sit Coco and have Ellsbury lead off and play center. Then late in the game, Coco will be a valuable asset as a defensive replacement and pinch runner
