If A-Rod opts out, it means that he doesn't want to be there (IMO). If he wants the most money, he'll stay with New York because that's the only team that can give him as much as he will want (assuming that all he's interested in is cashing in a gigantic paycheck). If he opts out, the Sox probably won't have to worry about the Yanks out-bidding them because if he opts out, I believe he just wants out of New York.

 

However, Mike Lowell will also bring in a tremendous amount of money because he is the only other attractive third baseman on the market this year. If you look at some of the other FA third basemen this year, it's not pretty at all.
