I agree - but you may want to change that Cora for short stop - and Lugo for ball boy thing.

Actually, I don't. Cora is a smarter player, worlds better on defense, and if given regular playing time would hit for a better average than the dismal .240 Lugo has put up. The only tool Lugo has over Cora is wheels. Thats it. Even during his recent tough stretch Cora has still done more to win us ball games by making great plays in the field.

Lugo sucks.

Fields and his 100+ K's and .288 OBP? right, there's a ROY for ya. Arguably Delmon Young is having a better offensive season than Fields (!2 HR's 81 RBI's).

I think the award is Dusty's.

........

Please tell me you're joking. I'd like to think you're better than this post. PLEASE.

Alex Cora:

April - .360/.407/.800/1.207

May - .294/.339/.353/.692

June - .216/.286/.378/.664

July - .152/.200/.212/..412

August - .257/.316/.343/.659

September - .000/.000/.000/.000

If we take a look at his second half, we get these numbers:

66 ABs

11 hits (A sparkling .167 BA)

He has 4 extra base hits, all doubles, making his slugging .227.

His OBP is .225. His OPS is then .453. His OPS+ is 19.

Now take a look at Lugo's numbers.

211 ABs, 63 hits (.299 BA)

24 XBH (.422 SLG)

OBP of .332.

OPS of .754. OPS+ of 95.

Thanks for the point. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw 'Cora' and 'Smart' together in the same sentense. Did you see Cora try to bunt 2 nights back - that was more hillarious than Mr Bean episode.

I know what the numbers are. Cora's playing time post-all star break has been far reduced. You can't really go by stats when a guy doesn't get regular time to play out of slumps and get more chances for balls to drop etc. etc.

In 46 games pre-all star break Cora hit .326. In 20 games since, he has been really struggling, but plays fantastic defense at a key position. I like defense over offense at short, and I like Cora way more than I like Lugo at short. Neither guys are my top choice, but I like Cora a lot as a player, and Lugo has just never really done much for me.

That said, Lugo has been a big factor in Cora not seeing as much playing time, and he has earned that time back. He's been ok in the second half, but still as a player, I just can't bring myself to like him.

Tell that to Wily Mo Pena.

Cora is not a 1.2 OPS player. No one is. HE has experienced what we call regression, closer to his normal abilities.

But your argument holds zero weight when you want a player with an OPS+ of 19 to get any kind of playing time.

Twice in one week Tito should have PH Cora and failed to do so. Twice in a crucial spot Cora has failed to deliver.

Sound statistical analysis here. Lugo has more range than Cora at short.

http://www.hardballtimes.com/thtstats/main/index.php?view=fielding&linesToDisplay=50&orderBy=pos&direction=DESC&qual_filter=ignore&season_filter%5B%5D=2007&league_filter%5B%5D=All&team_filter%5B%5D=BOS&pos_filter%5B%5D=6&Submit=Submit

Lugo has a slightly lower zone rating (.799 to .818), but has made more plays outside of his zone (50 to 10).

IMO, the differences in zone rating are made up by the differences in range, so their defenses are comparable.

Good thing Francona chooses to play him over Cora.

Like I said, I don't think offense is a priority at shortstop, I would rather have someone who plays the position well... Like Cora. If our offense was better top to bottom, it would be a little easier to advocate for a light hitting defensive shortstop.

...

I just told you that Lugo has better range than Cora does. Their differences in defense are negligible.

If that's the case, why play the worse offensive player??

Cora is one of the worst offensive players in baseball. So is Lugo at this point. Its like debating whether to be kicked in the nads with steel toes three times or have your balls locked in a vice for a minute. Both suck and leave you in pain.

Derek Jeter 2nd half - .288/.354/.386/.740

Julio Lugo 2nd half - .299/.332/.422/.754

Wow, never was confronted by that dilemma...so I guess we'll have to take your word for it.

By the way...which one was worse?

Jeter must be sick to his stomach to see the season A-Rod having the season he is having. Yeah - he always wanna win and all that crap - as long he is always in the middle of things. And yet Yankee fans worship the ground he walks ( not only chicks but dudes also) - 'Don't criticise the captain he has 4 f***ing rings' - etc.

I will never forget his face when A-Rod hit the mamoth home run - it's like 'Dude - wtf was that!'

Why would he be sick about it? You think Jeter doesn't recognize that without A-Rod's monster year we wouldn't be in the wild card race? Face it, when you're Derek Bleeping Jeter and you date Miss Universe and are revered by NYC, there isn't much that is going to make you an unhappy person, and having a teammate who gets you to the playoffs isn't one of them.

das...I agree to a point that Jeter isn't 100% thrilled with ARod's success.

by the way, how old were you when you dropped out of school?

Roy Halladay 2nd Half - 3.27 ERA/1.23 WHIP/.251 BAA

Brian Bannister 2nd Half - 3.19 ERA / 1.12 WHIP/.245 BAA

Obvioulsy Bannister is the better pitcher and I most certainly would rather have him than Halladay.

I went to grad school and business school and never dropped out. But obviously the only way we can estimate a person's education level is how well he/she posts in English in a sports chat room.

Off the topic - that Miss Universe is now a successful Bollywood actress though I have not watched any of her movies nor I ever will. I guess I want to stay away from anything that has any point of time had any association with Jeter- whom I love to hate. Hard to do that if you are from NYC - last year I took some of my out of town friends to Madame Tussauds on 42nd street - and guess whose wax model was staring at us there - Mr October junior.

yeah that wax model is actually trained to stare at females so next time bring only male friends along.

Tanner Boyle had another nice night, 2-5 with the game tying dong. He's hitting .325 and solidifying his ROY selection as we speak.

Way to take the argument completely out of context.

If Jacko calls Lugo one of the worst offensive players in baseball at this point, what does it make Jeter?

the same it would make Halladay as compared to Bannister, i.e. not as good according to the numbers. ;)

No, again, that's not true. For that argument to make sense I would have to say something along the lines of "Brian Bannister is one of the worst pitchers in all of baseball."

He said during the second half. So, during the second half, Bannister has been better than Halladay. What are you trying to argue?
