He'll be pretty good for them in the coming years if he gets regular playing time.

He'd be very good for them in the coming years if he just waived his "no minor league assignment" clause in his contract, and took a year or two to polish his skills.

Kid is 2-2 with a homer and 2 rbis tonight?

Getting Nationals fans hopes up real quick, gotta love it.

WMP is one of the only guys that I've ever seen the Sox trade away that I really want to flourish. I always liked him when he was here and I hope he RAKES for the Nationals. Nats fans need something to get excited about...Zimmerman and Pena could be the duo to do that. Obviously they're not the names you think of when you think of guys to build a franchise around, but we're spoiled being Sox and Yankee fans.

I wish him well...and i think he'll do very well. I wish we could have gotten him the ab's here but with drew's contract and cerano's inability to play a good RF, it just wasn't going to happen.

Agreed...but I have to say...I feel no more confident when Drew steps into the batter's box than I did when Pena did.

True, but i think that would have changed with regular ab's. I would have liked to see him get regular ab's for a month and see what could have happened

too small a sample size, a good night today signficantly boosts his stats there, but after statpicking from Aug 21 (after 3 games in WASH) up until today he had a .571 OPS with 1 BB and 18 K

I'd still rather have outfielders who bring more to the plate than strength. I like guys who make good contact, can draw a walk, bunt, move runners over, sac fly, hit for power, hit for average, have some speed, play well in the field....they don't have to be incredible at all those attributes or even possess all of them....but I would like them to have more than one.

Wish he got more AB's' date=' but Tito was to busy giving them to Hinske for some reason.[/quote']

Ohh please.....look back to all last years posting by me and youd see I was one of his biggest supporters and I called him the next Ortiz with Papa Jacks help.......and even I turned on him.

He sucked in Boston, and had zero chance of success with the way the fans grew more and more restless with every cool breeze from a mighty swing and miss. He was an automatic out, he had no role with the team, and he started bitching about his playing time and blaming his struggles on a lack of playing time. Playing time that he never earned. JD Drew handed him the RF job this year by being one of the least productive RF's in sox history. All Pena had to do was hit a little....just a little and he would have gotten AB's.

To put JD Drews season in perpective.....

Darren Lewis had a more productive season in 1998. He hit 8 HR that year....the same about Drew has this year. He also had 63 RBIs to Drews 50.

If we're going to cherry pick stats, why not pick Drew's best season, too?

From the other side, I disagree. Drew is pretty much an automatic out at this point. If you mistake to Drew, he MAY get a hit. Although your error zone for Pena was much smaller, if you made that mistake, he'd hit it to Canada. From Boston. I was glad to see Pena go, but you had no place for him. Put that guy at DH, he'll hit you 30+ homers every year.

It's only four more years of Drew, guys. :)

An automatic out at this point? He's been on one of his hot streaks this month. Sure as hell he will rebound to better years. Mike Lowell for example. For whatever reason he sank to a career low in 2005, he's come back nicely Id say

The guy makes Bobby Abreu look like Babe Ruth. The guy is slugging .399

Even when he hits it, it doesn't go far. At least Pena could hit past the infield.

The problem with Pena is that the Sox had no place for him. However, you guys should have had a strict platoon with him and Drew. I never understood why you didn't stick with that.

They did. Drew didn't play when lefties were pitching. Wily Mo will only get better with regular playing time. Platoons won't do anything for him.

Above all else, Pena needs playing time. I think he'll prove that RFK can't hold him (until the Nationals move into their new stadium, when's that, 2009?) but his strikeouts and lack of plate discipline will keep him from being an elite player.

I hate JD Drew. He's the new Millar for me, and it frustrates me to no end that this guys doesn't seem to ever swing the bat... but let's keep our expectations for WMP in check.

I think at his peak WMP's a .260 hitter with 40 homerun power. He may also strike out damn near 200 times in the process. The Red Sox didn't have space for him and I was sad to see him go (he's more fun than Drew) but he needs to play every day. Hopefully he gets that consistently in Washington.
