Gagne and Farnsworth....who would you take?

Recommended Posts

Just curious....

At this point, open for discussion...who would you take, Gagne or Farnsworth? Both for the rest of this season, and past that? Who would your pick be?

I have to say, at this point, I would take Farnsworth long-term. I think he can right himself.

For this year, I'm not sure. I would take Farnsworth by a hair, only because he doesn't seem to give up the big inning, just a run every inning.

Your thoughts?

Gagne and it's really not close.

For Gom's sake, I'm going to file this under the joke category.

The stats that Gagne put up as a Ranger, over the first four months of the season, should not be forgotten.

To even ask this question shows you don't really know baseball.

Gagne's stuff has looked good. I think he is getting sloppy because of the new "lesser" role and I think its going to shape up as Gagne learns his 8th inning blunders are costing us the game, and that the game is just as much on the line in the 8th as it is in the ninth.

We'll see. I still think our bullpen is fine either way, Delcarmen has not missed a beat, and if Gagne continues to falter, he could see a diminished role on top of his demotion to the 8th inning. Either way, our bullpen is still a strength.

But seriously, Gom, stop this trolling crap trying to fire people up.

Yup. G(n)om(e) is a tool right now, with his pansy little "Aaron Boone walk-off shot" avitar. Really, you're a big Aaron Boone fan G(n)om(e)? Cause, whatever he did for the Yankees, they dropped him like the dogshit that he is as soon as he hurt himself playing B-Ball. "Oh, A-Rod's available, let's buy him!!" yet you still have him on there. You start s***, then disappear when the going gets tough. You cheer for the only "sure thing" on earth, then you insult REAL sports fans for sticking with their team through the hard times. Stop trying to provoke people and start talking baseball.

(yeah, I'm a little bitter, but who is this guy and why can't he post on a Yankee's site? At least Jacko attempts to be respectful.)

Gagne's ERA with the Red Sox is nearly 20. Yup, don't know baseball. NEXT.

No' date=' it just shows he's a troll.[/quote']

Funny how I start getting called a troll again when the Red Sox start swooning. In that case, guess I'll be a troll the whole month of August, lol.

This wasn't a question about the Red Sox pen. Just a question about two good relievers [and in Gagne's case, an incredibly great reliever] in the past, who are having problems this season.

Everyone knows how dominant Gagne has been, and Farnsworth's ERA in the three season's prior to coming to the Yankees was 3.30, 4.73, and 2.19.

I never bought this past accomplishment stuff after a player has had serious injury, especially pitchers. I watched the Sox games with Gagne, and he topped out at about 92-93 with little movement on his pitches. Farnsworth regularly tops out at 96. I think Farnsworth's stuff at the moment is better, and he has a better upside, but Gagne has an infinitely better makeup. Gagne now rates as your third or fourth best pitcher in the pen, after Paps, Oki, and depending on where you put MDC. With the Yankees, he is buried behind the batboy.

So my queston is valid. Right now, for the next 7 weeks of baseball, who would you rather have? What about after this season?

Just like what you guys did to Nomar right? So these are your true colors when your team starts to fall apart. I love it! I'm not a big Boone fan, never was, just a huge fan of that moment. Don't forget, we only got Arod after your FO dropped the ball. As for buying players, lets see...12 of the 25 players on the current roster are home grown. How many do you have? Try again.

Exactly how did I disappear? For two weeks, and when I came back, my team had made up, what, 2 games [10.5 to 8.5]? Yeah, going got real tough there. Sorry, had to take care of a death in the family, you nitwit. Oh yeah, it was out of the country. You can't take me posting on this site? Aww, poor baby. Shall we call your mommy over to kiss it and make it feel better? I come to this site because most of the Yankee fans act like you do. You don't find the quality of posters you find like Jacko, Schillingouttheks, Yeszir, ORS, and company. You aren't included in this list.

As for cheering for the only "sure thing" on earth, I cheer for the New York teams. Guess why? I live in New York. I cheer for the woefull Knicks, Rangers, Islanders, Giants, and Jets [not really the Mets though]. Let me guess...you root for the Celtics right? Moron.

Anyways, I will revisit this post at the end of the season, and compare the stats of the two players from when I started the post till the end of the season. What I was really saying was, who's the lesser of the two evils at this point?

Are you being serious right now? That's in like 5 appearances. You've got to be kidding me. He puts up a 2.16 ERA in 34 appearances with Texas, has a couple bad outings and in come the Farns comparisons. You're a joke.

His velocity is way down. I wasn't worried about Rivera this year because his velocity was there, just not his location. Did you watch him pitch? He has had nothing. I wonder if he may be hurt, because at the beginning of the year, he was throwing 95. He's lost 3 MPH on his fastball in 4 months. Before you kill this, realize that in his 4 previous appearances before he joined the Red Sox, he had given up 4 runs, 7 hits, and 1 BB over 4 IP.

I wonder if he may be hurt, in all seriousness.

I cant believe Gagne is getting so much crap.

-yes his velocity is down

-yes hes been horrible since getting to boston

-am i panicking?

no, because there's still a lot of baseball to be played, give the guy a break, be optimistic, give him a chance and when he comes in dont be saying oh great here comes gagne NO! say yaa here comes gagne to shut it down for Papelbon.

Give the guy some time, you'll see it will all be fine.

As for the injury thing, i wouldnt call it a injury but maybe is something is bothering his arm.

Anyway in the end, he will be fine, and you guys will all be saying, well, ya i knew he would turn it around inside knowing you doubted the guy.

maybe something is bothering his arm? What, like the pounds and pounds of scar tissue from previous surgeries? Or maybe the fact that his back and shoulders need to compensate for the half ton of canadian blubber he is dragging around in the event of a long drought eh? Thus far, he has sucked. He hasnt had one solid outing and he has been directly responsible for 2 losses in games that were already wins. It isnt like he came into a tie game and gave it up. He came into a winning cause and gave it up, twice, and both times resulted in losses. He has sucked, and his stuff looks flat. Could it be tired arm from not pitching for 2 yrs. Could it be that he really has crappy stuff and had been getting by on presence on knowledge? Whatever it is, he looks defeated when he steps on the mound, then throws pitches that solidify that appearance.

i agree maybe it was the layoff and hes tired.

But who says he still cant get the job done.

I dont know im just going to be optimistic and hope for the best, im a gagne fan what am i supossed to say?

No offense Gom (I meant offense before, I don't mean it now :) ) but have you actually WATCHED gagne with the Sox? His velocity hasn't been "way down" he's consistently hitting 93-94. It's a little down, from the 97 he used to hit, but he's still throwing hard.

Personally, I think we've seen two unfortunate outings for a guy who definitely knows how to pitch. His career is on the line now, as nobody will give him s*** if he sucks this year. He has been missing his spots and--as often happens when pitchers switch teams--I don't think Varitek completely understands how to best utilize Gagne's arsenal quite yet. They should come around. I still like him on this squad and am hopeful for his success here.

Actually his velocity has actually gone up since the begining of the season. He was throwing 89-91 back in May when the Rangers played the Sox in Texas. He has hit 94 on the radar gun with the sox which I am pretty sure his as hard as he has been throwing all season long.

You know whats funny? I was watching the Orioles feed, and he was hitting 91, 92. The Sox gun I guess is different. You know, with this comparison, I have to admit, Farnsworth is baffling to me. He regulars hits 96-97, but his main problem is that his slider is 88-89, so everything comes in at one speed. I really think that he has electric stuff, but what a head case. I think if you put Farnsworth's stuff with Gagne's makeup, you would have a dynamite pitcher. As it is, right now, they both suck.

I have watched the sox feeds for 2 of his appearances and not once has he hit 94. He has sit 90-91. Not sure what you have been watching.

He hit 94 the other night against TB.

Suddenly, after yet another Gagne implosion after a great Sox rally....

How bad does the comparison of Farnsworth and Gagne look?

I'll tell you the truth. It's no comparison at all. I take Farnsworth in a heartbeat. Farnsworth has given up more than two runs only once all season. Gagne's done it three times, twice in the last week.

I knew when he took, what 11 pitches on the first batter that the game was over. I have to thank Francona for this loss. Why bring in Papelbon withn a four run lead and render him useless in the second game?

I have never seen what was supposed to be an impact player s*** the bed so bad for either us or you guys this quickly. Thank God you got him and we didn't.

For all of you guys who ripped me for this thread.....LOL!
