Cardinals acquired RHP Joel Pineiro and cash considerations from the Red Sox for a player to be named later.

Joel Pineiro tossed seven strong innings to win his second straight start on Wednesday.

Red Sox Nation must be scratching its collective head wondering where this guy was all season. He yielded just five hits and two runs, striking out four and walking none to earn his second win and trim his ERA to 2.84.

I am not scratching my head. Instead, I am relaxed scratching my balls knowing that Pineiro will never again pitch on the mound as a member of the BoSox.

I think this is another example of how awful NL baseball is. Time and time again these pieces of trash go to the NL and find success. Its quite embarassing for their league and it really doesnt say much about NL offenses when a guy is standing on the mound with a brown spot on the rear end of his pants and the deer in headlights look on his face.

EDIT: Example #2 of s***** NL baseball. JC Romero.

I had a feeling about this. Duncan may be the best pitching coach in baseball; he did it with Weaver last year.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - St. Louis pitching coach Dave Duncan said there was a very simple reason why Joel Pineiro struggled with the Red Sox [team stats]. Duncan said he determined during the right-hander’s first start with the National League team 2 ?weeks ago that he was inadvertently tipping off his pitches to batters.

“You don’t have the kind of stuff like he has and get hit like he did,” Duncan told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “You start looking for why it was so obvious.”

In three starts since the flaw was presumably discovered, Pineiro is 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA, while walking no batters and striking out 11 in 19 innings. The 26-year-old, who was 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 31 relief appearances for the Sox, was traded to St. Louis on July 31 for a player to be named.

Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell didn’t agree with Duncan’s assessment.

“No, there was nothing like that here,” Farrell said.

Catcher Jason Varitek [stats], however, said he wouldn’t rule out anything.

“I’m not saying it’s unlikely because it could be very likely,” he said. “It happens with a lot of pitchers, so there’s always a possibility. He had good stuff while he was here. We just weren’t able to get it all together.”

Varitek said that determining if a pitcher is tipping pitches is difficult to see from behind the plate.

“We usually have guys who are watching the game on the side who usually pick up on that stuff pretty well,” he said.

Sox manager Terry Francona was just happy Pineiro was succeeding in his new locale.

Good for the Cards if they were able to figure out what was wrong with Pineiro. If Duncan believes he was tipping his pitches then he must mean he was tipping them from the stretch, as the sox don't allow their relievers to pitch from the wind-up. Personally, I think it's hogwash. If he figured out what was wrong with Weaver last year then how come he's been hittable this season despite getting that great piece of advice? How about Suppan?

Seems to me that Duncan is of COURSE a great pitching coach, but not everything he touches turns to gold.

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, Joel Pineiro's two-year deal with the Cardinals is worth $13 million.

Amazing what two months of quality pitching can do for a free agent these days. Pineiro hasn't had a quality year since 2003, and prior to August and September, he hadn't even had a solid run of starts since May and June of 2004. If the Cardinals actually think they know what they're getting here, they're crazy. It still might work out, but it's scary to think that this is all that $13 million buys. Kyle Lohse is drooling in anticipation of the winter meetings.
