Lester was called up today and is getting the start against Cleveland tomorrow. Tavarez goes to the pen, and Lopez will probably be sent down.

I think this is too soon. His recent struggles in AAA are making me think hes tiring and needs to spend the year building up strength. I would hate for the kid to come up, get handled, and not have a future in the bigs because of it. Or, lose trade value... I don't know.

Could be a good move, who knows, but right now I'm not feeling like a guy with a 5.52 ERA in six June starts is call up worthy. So far, his July hasn't been much more impressive...

I think this is more of a test to see where he is' date=' because I doubt they send Gabbard down the way he's been pitching, and once Schilling's back up, they will probably send Jon back down.[/quote']

.. If he's lights out I wouldn't mind sending Wakefield to the pen ..

1.Beckett

2.Matsuzaka

3.Schilling

4.Gabbard

5.Lester

Maybe it's an attempt to showcase him.

I have to admit, it's a strange move. He's not shown that he's ready. If he's in the long-term plans, this makes no sense.

That was the first thing that came to my mind. It would be interesting to hear any grumblings about scouts being present at the game.

The other possibility is Theo thinks the price to bring help in from the outside is too high and won't sacrifice the future for this year. He could send Wake to the pen and sink or swim with Lester learning on the job...

how many starters can we send to the pen though? at some point someone needs to be traded. The pen looks to be like:

CL Papelbon

Set-up Okajima

MR Delcarmen

MR Timlin

MR Donnelly*

MR Lopez/Breslow/Pineiro

MR Tavarez/Wakefield/Snyder

The Rockies are interested in Tavarez so once Schilling gets back the rotation looks like Beckett/DiceK/Schilling/Wakefield/Gabbard-Lester, so trading Tavarez looks like the best move IMO.

Seems to be its more of a case of Tavarez being so bad lately and the FO realizing they've got about all they're gonna get out of Tavarez as a starter

agree 100%. Pitching him in Cleveland against the murderer's row after trending downwards this past 6 weeks or so is not the best scenario for the kid to succeed. And that is what the manager and GM are supposed to do. Put players in positions to succeed.

Def glad to see Lester back. Albeit tonight is a tall order for him. But I hope does well. If Gabbard pitches well the next couple of starts and Wake holds his own the I think Lester is only up until Schill is ready to go.

On the other hand this could be as some have said to "showcase" him for a trade. I think Buchholz has surpassed him in being the teams #1 pitching prospect. They might be a little more willing to trade him this yr then they were last yr. If its the right player then ya I don't mind. But Lester is a fan favorite so I don't know what the reaction would be. I'd like to see him stay and be in our rotation for yrs to come but its not my call. All I know is, if we trade him, we better be getting somebody really good, and someone under our control for a few yrs too. Not just a rental.

he definitely proved me wrong. He looked a lot like he did last year, getting into trouble but not getting rattled and getting out of it.Great to see him back.
