C'est necessaire. Papelbon will have to close this one out if the Sox are to win.

The Sox have to get in a position to win. Therefore, Paps should be pitching NOW.

Not if they have another all-star reliever.

Or... apparently Mike Timlin will be our savior tonight.

Yeah. Okajima is just fine. Let's keep Paps on the bench. Awesome plan.

I didn't say to keep Papelbon on the bench. Where did I say that? If you had asked I would have said that you stretch Okajima out tonight and use Papelbon only as absolutely necessary. He should be warmed up and able to come in right now.

It's a marathon not a sprint and sometimes your role guys have to win it or lose it for you. Last year we made every key situation a Papelbon situation and he was done by 2/3 of the way through the season. This isn't a playoff game. It is a game where a AAA call-up for us started against one of the league's best starters.

:dunno: It doesn't seem too crazy to me TheKilo.

You're right. We need to save Papelbon. If only there was some kind of a break coming up, maybe two or three days where a pitcher could just take time off...

The Yanks and Jays also lost tonight. This is not a game where you settle for a loss. I know we have a huge lead, but it only helps to extend it.

Yeah... if only there were such a break. If only tomorrow were the beginning of that break and we didn't potentially need him to save a game for Matsuzaka. Smart ass.

Do you want me to just admit that you're right and defer to you on all Red Sox related issues from here on out?

The point is that if Papelbon starts the inning then you're guaranteed to either have to use him for 2 innings (which means no tomorrow) or someone else is going to have to shut down the top offensive team in baseball to win this one.

Hmmmm. So, that's one less inning on Papelbon's arm and an ability for him to close tonight and possibly tomorrow if necessary. Our All-Star set-up guy did it again, despite your lack of confidence in him.

So, if I hear you correctly, you're saying settle for a loss and hope to win tomorrow.

Okajima may work out of this and he gets all the credit in the world for doing so, but I think Papelbon has not been babied to this point. He's actually been handled really well.

And like SOTK said, it's a chance to gain ground on the division again, after losing ground last night. I say go for the win.

Okajima works out of it. Nice.
