Should people get annoyed at the manager for defending his player?

 

Years from now we will look back at the egos on this team and the Red Sox of the Tito era, and be amazed that there wasn't more chaos. He has a calming influence and the ability to stay politically neutral while teammates hate one another, fans hate players, players hate fans, fans hate the front office, fans hate him. Papi, Manny, Nomar, Damon, Pedro, Schilling, Foulke, Papelbon, Drew, Varitek, DiceK, that's a whole lot of egos to navigate.

 

All in all I think he does a great job with this team and I think he makes the right call most of the time.

Sorry, I thought you were responding to SBF's "esteemed manager" comment.

 

He has clearly had a crappy year. But I think there is something to be said about the fact that this guy--who was brought in to hit 9th--has the luxary of sucking in the 9 spot because the team is doing so well and winning. If they start NOT winning (like they did a few weeks back) then there will undoubtedly be panic about Lugo, and no real obvious answer other than playing through it and accepting that he's a SS and you're lucky if your SS can hit.
