The bat and the starter are both high-priority. I would say the bat a little bit more than the starter (considering that this lineup can go into NASTY, NASTY slumps every now and then), but the need for a starter is pretty high as well. We're an injury away from cycling the Jason Johnson's of the world through the back end of our rotation.

I think SP is #1 on the priority list. A bat would be nice, but there is talent in this lineup. We've still not seen them all click for more than a game or two. They'll score, but they can't have chumps after Beckett and Dice. Wake is a half-chump. Schilling might be a chump. Lester would be a chump this year. Gabbard will probably peak as a chump-lite. We need another starter to be a favorite headed into the postseason.

technically, you are already doing it with Gabbard. And with Schilling, he is so hit or miss when healthy that he may come back and contribute to the problem. Compound that with Wake being extremely hot/cold (as is his nature, but a little bit more streaky this yr IMO) and Tavarez hitting a brick wall, your rotation is really looking only 2 deep. That is why I was for the Buehrle trade from a sox perspective. When you know you are getting solid starts from 3 parts of your rotation, it is pretty easy to stomach the gamble in the 4 and 5 hole. When it is only 2, you start doing the Spahn/Sain chant and pray for rain.

good post. My thoughts exactly

a few weeks ago, our biggest need was a righty set-up man but I think clearly MDC has stepped up into that role. I'm starting to think with Tavarez likely headed to the pen soon, we're gonna be fine there. Another starter and a better 4th outfielder are definitely the priorities

I agree with jacko' date=' the pen is fine we need a starter, and another bat would be nice too[/quote']Getting a starter will also strenghten the bullpen, because Tavarez will go back to the pen when Schilling comes back. Adding another bat is a bit more problematic. We are not going to replace Youk, Pedroia, Manny, Drew or Varitek, or ortiz at DH. That leaves Lowell, who I would not be in favor of trading. He has been as steady as a rock this year. Were are stuck with Lugo and there aren't many Shortstops available ...maybe Tejada? The only other opening is CF. I like Griffey to play some CF, LF and DH.

Randy Winn? Emil Brown? Or take a chance at starters on teams not likely to sniff the playoffs, Chicago's Jermaine Dye or Phillies' Pat Burrell?

The rangers are also said to maybe trading off Sammy Sosa and Kenny Lofton

No thank you to Sammy Sosa and Kenny Lofton, who apparently calls his manager a racist for not leading off games with him and having him DH instead of the white guy they had in CF, oh wait, Bernie was black.....wait, so how does that make Torre racist? They are dealing those guys becuase they suck, or are a headache. There is a reason Kenny Lofton, as good as his career has been, has played for 11 different teams, and has had 12 different transactions in 17 years.

Dye...no thank you. I think Burrell may look good in Boston though. Regardless of his struggles I think the price owuld be high.

Theo announced at the Gagne PC that Donnelly will have tommy john surgery...and he praised him for keeping it quiet so the rangers couldn't drive the price up.

(posted this in the Gagne thread also)

Good luck Brendan!
