Back again with another of my informal discussions...

Irrespective of the view's of the MLBPA, what kind of penalty would you like to see imposed in baseball for steroids/performance enhancing drugs?

As always, I draw upon the collective intelligence of this board in the hopes of a meaningful discussion.

My personal opinion: First offense, one year ban. Second offense, lifetime ban.

The only way to get rid of this, and it isn't going to completely ever go away, is to make the cost of getting caught so prohibitive that it isn't worth the risk for the majority of players.

Your thoughts?

I don't think the player's union would ever go for that.

1st - 75 games

2nd - season

3rd - 2 seasons

4th - life

I think this essentially shows the severity of the penalty, but at the same time won't let the player's union use the "He didn't know what he was taking" defense, now known as the Shawne Merriman defense.

I mean by the 3rd time, it'd be doubtful any team would sign the accused anyway.

Personally, in my opinion, the first time should call for a lifetime ban. No second chances. If you're dumb enough to do it the first time, then act dumb like you didn't know you were taking steroids, well then that's a load of crap. Giambi, Sheffield, Bonds, all the juicers should be given a lifetime ban. It's stupid, because here these guys are, taking something to help them cheat, and they let them play, but in 1919, the White Sox have some players purposely throw the game, and they couldn't even prove Joe Jackson played bad because he played great through the entire season, yet all of them were banned. And even Rose, who simply gambled (I know they can't gamble, but it's not helping either team get the advantage) on games was then not allowed into the hall of fame, despite an amazing career. It sickens me to see this stuff happen. HOW can you look at a player that's done something like steroids? Even corke bats. My respect for Sammy Sosa went down entirely when that crap went down. These people come from all over the world with "hopes and dreams" well then they shouldn't be stupid to throw it away with cheats.

That's where I stand. First offense = Lifetime ban.

How many chances are they gonna give these guys?... come on, who would be stupid enough to first, do it in the first place, but second, do it 4 times to get a life banned...

what they have now is a pretty good thing. You cannot penalize a kid for a lifetime for being stupid once. But if you get caught a third time, then the penalty should be lifetime ban with reinstatement hearings yearly and monthly drug testing.

MONEY!!!!!! come on guys the only way your gonna get to these guys is by hitting them where it hurts most, and thats in the Wallet..

1st time- 50 games, 25% of your yearly pay

2nd time- 1 Season Loss, 75% of yearly pay

3rd time - Either ban them for life, or extended seasons, and when or if they come back its league Minimum pay....

This is the only way to get threw to these guys, because for the most part there trying to beef up there numbers by using this stuff so they can get the MONEY!
