"Today I made an extremely difficult decision: Marty Schottenheimer is no longer the head coach of the San Diego Chargers.

"This decision was so hard because Marty has been both a friend and valued coach of our team. But my first obligation is always to do what is in the best interest of our fans and the entire Charger organization. I must take whatever steps are necessary to deliver a Super Bowl trophy to San Diego. Events of the last month have now convinced me that it is not possible for our organization to function at a championship level under the current structure. On the contrary, and in the plainest possible language, we have a dysfunctional situation here. Today I am resolving that situation once and for all.

"My decision means that our organization will be obligated to pay the last year of Marty Schottenheimer's contract and will begin an intense search for a new head coach at this relatively late date, but these are sacrifices that I believe are necessary to give the Chargers the best possible chance to win on the field this season.

"Our fans deserve to know what changed for me over the last month. When I decided to move ahead with Marty Schottenheimer in mid-January, I did so with the expectation that the core of his fine coaching staff would remain intact. Unfortunately, that did not prove to be the case, and the process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager. In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyond any doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation and create an environment where everyone at Charger Park would be pulling in the same direction and working at a championship level. I expect exactly that from our entire Charger organization in 2007."

Can't say that I'm surprised because of the disappointment they went through out there after the loss to the Pats. It seems like kinda weird timing though and it seems like it'd be difficult to hire a better option at this point unless they're searching from within.

Wade Phillips is gone and so is Marty.

Does Alex Spanos believe that someone else can do better than what Marty has done the last three years?

Regular season W's are nice but this guy's a proven loser come playoff time.

yea, couldn't say it better. He wins, because he has good pieces around him. I can't say that it won't get worst for them, because you never know. What I can say though, is as long as LT, and Antonio gates are there... things should be lookin' fine.

I think people are giving Marty too much credit for the Chargers regular season record. Alot of the reasons behind the success of the team come from the ownership getting the right players and the work the rest of the coaching staff puts in. And lets not forget how talented a team they have. In the end, you'll only be as good as your players, and for SD, they got some damned good players.

The Chargers have to be looking to win the Superbowl. They have a great team and I don't think they have to worry about getting to the playoffs; if the players play, they should make it. I'd rather have almost any other head coach in the playoffs over Marty and the Chargers will get that now.

Marty is def. a product of the players surrounding him, but he knows how to make a team play together and gel.

That all said I would have been looking for someone else as a coach anyway after the loss to NE. That team should have won it all with little problem.

Marty let Elway drive 98 yards.

Marty made Ernest Byner fumble.

Marty made his kicker miss field goals.

Marty made Marlon McCree fumble.

14-2 should not get you fired, regardless of your lack of playoff success. The fact that SD lost its head coach and BOTH their coordinators means that the front office is a mess. AJ Smith is a control freak. I don't think you'll do any better than 14-2 and HFA throughout the playoffs.

marty blows dogs

he constantly puts his team in a position of failure

he maybe the best regular season coach ever but his playoff gags are historical and very relevant

sandiego, with no head coach,is now the odds on favorite to win it all in 07-08

Schottenheimer giving Cameron and Wade Phillips permission to speak with other teams was a large part of why they let him go.

No one else notices how much Marty sucked?

clock management??

putting the ball in phil rivers hands when ld was avg 7yrds a carry against the pats??

every decision he makes is wrong, even if it looks right

hes a jonah,a parriah and a career loser despite his regular season success

hopefully the raiders sign him after they fire their new coach in november

LT should have gotten more touches but if McCree knocks the ball down or falls to the ground after the INT it's a moot point.

What about his other "playoff failures"?

last year against the jets as a 10 point favorite at home he gets beat by herman edwards

with kansas city he won 13 games twice, having home field thruout and wasnt able to get a single playoff win

these are his last 10 seasons

| 1994 kan | 9 7 0 | 0 1 |

| 1995 kan | 13 3 0 | 0 1 |

| 1996 kan | 9 7 0 | 0 0 |

| 1997 kan | 13 3 0 | 0 1 |

| 1998 kan | 7 9 0 | 0 0 |

| 2001 was | 8 8 0 | 0 0 |

| 2002 sdg | 8 8 0 | 0 0 |

| 2003 sdg | 4 12 0 | 0 0 |

| 2004 sdg | 12 4 0 | 0 1 |

| 2005 sdg | 9 7 0 | 0 0 |

| 2006 sdg | 14 2 0 | 0 1 |

hes 0-5 since 94 with some pretty good teams

now

you can tell me its not his fault that the guy fumbled or the rookie kicker shanked a kick or ernest byner dropped the ball or clay matthews couldnt pick elway but to me it all comes down to marty being marty

hes a jonah

shouldnt there have been a blow out somewhere??

when you win 13 games and cant win a playoff game then i think theres some accountability on the head coach

if you want to say hes unlucky i'll agree

i wouldnt allow that kind of luck near my team if i owned an nfl franchise

2004

hes got 1st and 10 on the jets 20 in overtime after running thru them like a knife thru butter

he genuflects twice, loses 3 yards and has the rookie kicker come in to shank a 40yder

now

people will say the kid shouldve made it and marty got burnt by the byner fumble in 88

but thats my point

every decision,be it conservative or aggressive is f***ed up

there are people who just cant get it done in this world
