we'd have the best rotation in the Majors bar none - I mean, can you imagine a starting 5 of Clemens, Schilling, Beckett, Matsuzuka, and Papelbon? That'd be sick

After the Drew signing, and the Matsuzaka signing...I find it doubtful considering we already have money floudering in Clement.

I'd like him here for sure. If there's anything we've learned from last year' date=' it's that we can't have too many solid pitchers[/quote']

That will accept a reasonable deal, that is. You CAN spend too much on a pitcher that will only give you 3 or 4 months.

if we get Clemens maybe we can move Papelbon back to the pen - Clemens, Schilling, Beckett, Matsuzaka, and Wakefield is pretty good

Good point

I think Clemens will be wearing a Red Sox uniform before the 2007 season is over.

We'll see. I think he makes a decision to pitch in February. Starts working out in April and holds a team hostage for a return in June. Whoever has the most SP problems will likely get him.

Whoever has the best shot at winning plus the money is where he will go. He learned his lesson last year joing the awful Houston team when he could have joined the NYY or BOS( at that point in time I thin BOS was still in 1st and NYY wasn't far behind). I thinks its NYY or BOS, I do'n't think Houston has the money, maybe if they are in 1st place or close, but I think he joins one of the other teams or retires.

Sidenote: Let us not forget that at the trade deadline he did accept a trade to BOS but it was the owner that vetoed it.

If my life depended on it, I'd still say Houston. But with Pettitte in the Bronx, my 2nd choice would be NYY and a distant 3rd would be Boston. If theo is true in his desire to stay below the lux tax, then I really think Clem to Boston is not gonna happen.

I agree Jacko. Houston is still destination #1, IMO. NY has a chance if they want him. Boston is unlikely interested with other holes to fill while being close to the LT threshold. The wild-card for Boston though, is Manny. If they are able to fill those holes by trading him, that frees up salary, and then anything could happen.

I know what you mean about the LT tax, but like I've stated before they might go over it for a season and then next year it will be back down below after alot of players come off the books.

Schilling- 13M

Wakefield-4M

Lowell-9M

Timlin-2.8M

Hinske-2.8M

Thats 30M and those are the guys I can think of off the top of my head. I won't count Manny because if hes dealt then someone will most likely be signed to replace his bat( 15M+ I would guess for a big RH hitter). I know I stated on another thread that the be in the hunt for one of the big 3 CF's, but know I think of it, unless one of them moves to LF they might not sign here, because that would trap Ellsbury in the minors, and from what I can tell if he has a good year in AAA this season he will be in CF next year.

Even better now where talking 40M off from what 6 guys. This has to be in the FO mindset knowing that all that money will be coming off next season.

bsn. But then you are opening up 2 spots in the rotation and getting rid of Timlin. The money you are freeing up will be reinvested. And if you are talking about a chase after Hunter or Jones, then the sox wil surge past the lux tax. There are penalties for repeat offenders. I think that is what the sox are afraid of. Surging past the lux tax and being unable to get below it.

They will have Beckett, Matsuzaka,Papelbon in the rotation. Either they fill in the spots with some of our own guys or low cost FA. I think those three are a very big triple threat. The 4th and 5th spots can be manned by inning eaters or young guys from the farm. Just because the rotation has open spots doesn't mean they will go out and fill them with top tier pitchers. The LT went from 135 to 145 this year, I imagine it will climb again next season to around 155+. Where around 138 now I think, with a closer to add.

Just for fun lets say we get BP arm and a closer and we come in at 145M, sign Clemens for 18M that puts us at 163M...

Take off Clemens and everyone else next off season and where around 105 Million, with the Luxury threshhold at minimum of 145( if it doesnt go up) we have 40 Million to spend next offseason and if it does go up where talking 50M to spend if they want, which is more then some teams can say.

And the LT bumps to ~$155M. They'll have about $50M of room to work with.

I expect the 4th and 5th spots to be filled with 1-2 yr guys, after that look for 1 or more of the killer B's to take the spots.

If that doesn't work out, like ORS and myself have pointed out they will have money to spend.

RF,CF,SS,2B,1B,C, atleast 3 spots in the rotation and a couple guys in the pen are young and locked up long term. This is going to give the Red Sox alot of financial flexability in the future.

Next offseason the focus will be on 3B/1B( depending on where Youk ends up playing). The usual BP guys will need be added, and two back end of the rotation pitchers. The Sox have postioned themselves well for the next 4-7 years with a young core of players. After Manny is gone( unless they go get a big bat next offseason) our biggest contract will be Drew... Point is the Sox are going to have plenty of money to spend for along time.
