can we all agree never to reply to a700 again' date=' he is out of his fu*%ing mind thinking we should sign Palmerio.[/quote']Palmiero with over 3,000 hits and 500 HRs expresses that he would like to continue to play and I ask for a discussion whether the Sox should take a chance on him and give my opinion that he might be a worhtwhile platoon and that makes me nuts?:dunno: I didn't say I would give him a big contract or a guaranteed contract. My point was that if no one wants him and he has something to prove and he'll play for a bargain price, I'd consider platooning him. Too me it was far crazier to give Jason "the Ultimate Loser" Johnson so many starts last year.

You're talking about players juicing in the 90s... he gets a pass for being tested positive in 2005? Would this go to say that you are for steroids and wont mind at all hearing about current & ex Sox players juicing up??
I think the steroids scandal was a disgrace for the game of baseball. It was done with the tacit approval of management, ownership and the press. Everyone got rich from the game regaining its popularity after the strike through juiced up Homers. Unfortunately, this almost ruined the integrity of the game as major records fell during the juicing period. At one time I was all for striking the records of MG Wire, Canseco, Bonds and Sosa, but it has become quite apparent that the use of steroids was widespread. Not only did the big hitters use it, but so did the pitchers and the scrubs as well. The playing field was a lot more level than I had initially suspected. I no longer favor striking records, because I don't know how you can accurately determine who did roids and who didn't. Let's not forget the 100 positive drug tests from 2002 that are waiting to be disclosed. This stuff was going on for a long time by a lot of players. As for Raffy, he got caught and he paid the price (a mere 10 games) as dictated by the rules governing the game. I would not scapegoat him because he got caught. The owners and management were complicit in this scandal. If you think Raffie is finished as a player, I would agree that no one should sign him, but he should not be blacklisted because he did steroids. The NFLl is not blacklisting Merriman. He made the pro-bowl and he could be a Super Bowl champion in February.

I just don't think there is any reason to sign an aging player who is willing to throw a teamate under the bus at any given time, I'm sure Tejada remembers that. The guy is a jerk and shouldn't be given a third chance. BTW I hope I didn't offend you a700, I was just trying to grasp your thought and I couldn't.

I like the direction you're going with getting guys with such credentials, but just not Palmero. Despite the steroids there has ALWAYS been something that i don't like abou thim, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone on that one.

Of course, we would all be insane to not take a 1999 rafael palmeiro line of:

.324/.420/.630/1050

47 HR, 148 RBI

That's Manny Ramirez or David Ortiz in a great year.

I think that so far the Sox have gone relatively unscathed (publically) by the steroid controversy. It has been a bleak period in baseball overall, but a very exciting one for Sox and Yankees fans. don't go ahead and bring it in if you don't have to. We know they have players who did(do) it but not this high-profile.

Keep contributing though, A700, you're not nuts.

He did that in Texas. 8 years ago. I fail to see how he helps the 2007 Red Sox.

Pass.

That was pretty despicable. I was just throwing out the suggestion to generate discussion. I expected some strong opinions considering Raffy's baggage. I was not disappointed.

The point is that in an RBI/get on base situation late in the game I'd rather have a player who has put up HOF numbers than not cause he's probably naturally better. Just not Rafael Palmeiro. I pass as well.
