The Red Sox have expressed some interest in Brendan Donnelly, who is due somewhere around $2 million in arbitration.

The Angels are open to moving Donnelly for a solid prospect. If they end up trading him, they could use the money freed up by the deal to bring in left-hander Arthur Rhodes.

D. Murphy and Gabbard maybe??

i actually think Donelly could be a steal and a good pickup as our 7th inning guy

the LA Times article says they want a decent pitching prospect in return

Kris Johnson maybe?? Who do you consider a "decent pitching prospect"

Johnson is a decent prospect. He should get it done, but he is the biggest LH prospect on the sox (so long as you dont consider Lester a prospect anymore).

He's younger, but I think Doubront is the best LHP prospect on the Sox (keeping the same Lester assumption).

We can't trade Kris Johnson' date=' he was drafted less than a year ago. I'm 90% sure there's a rule stating you can't trade a guy less than a year after he was drafted.[/quote']

True.

Although, isn't the window on PTBNL 6 months? If so, he could be traded and named later. No matter though. I don't think Donnelly will command an early draft pick. If the Angels want a solid pitching prospect, then solid better mean "able to spot start when someone gets hurt" or they aren't getting a thing. An older middle reliever with rapidly declining peripherals does not get you much.

Donnelly is a guy who will net the angels something significant. He is a reliable power arm in the pen. There are a ton of teams that would love to have him.

Look at his stats, namely ERA, WHIP, and K/9 for his career and tell me the trend. Look at his age too.

Stats? Who needs numbers to prove your point when you can just use conjecture all the time?

I am absolutely not arguing that ORS. What I am saying is that plenty of teams need a bullpen arm and if the angels are serious about moving him, he will be moved, and the angels will get something worthwhile in return.

That's where we differ in opinion. Those trends are no great secret, and that goes into the equation. I seriously doubt his return is anything more than a AAAA player if they get a "prospect" for him.

And, this isn't coming from a person that wants the Sox to get him so I'm rationalizing the acquisition cost. Nope. I don't want him on the Sox at all.

I've always liked Donnelly. He would be a solid option for the bullpen and at worst, he is much better than some of the bums that resided in our pen last year.

Donnelly would be nice to have, but under no circumstances do we deal a Kris Johnson for him, I hope. Delcarmen, at 24 and injured, put up the same to better numbers than Donnelly last year. Donnelly's DERA was 4.39 to Delcarmen's 4.71 and he edged him in H/9, but Manny had him beat in K:BB, K/9, BB/9, HR/9, and DH indicates Donnelly was "lucky" whereas Manny was not (-4 to 11). Just based on age, but also trending, we can probably guess which of the two is likely to improve (and regress). Also, I am personally of the opinion that at some point Donnelly's mechanics will cause his head, shoulder and arm to fly off into the dugout, but I'm omitting that from my analysis. :)

I like the Murphy/Gabbard deal proposed earlier, though!
