Rangers, Red Sox discussing Manny

Nov 17 - The Red Sox are talking to the Rangers about a possible deal for Manny Ramirez, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reports. Texas is looking for a bat to help bolster its lineup, in an offseason in which they might lose Carlos Lee, Mark DeRosa and Gary Matthews Jr.

I don't know where i stand on this. If we get rid of him, then we will be pressured to go out and get someone like Lee or Soriano, but we get rid of his huge contract at the same time. Maybe we can get Tiexera in the deal.

Rangers interested in Manny?

According to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, the Red Sox are talking to the Texas Rangers about a possible deal for Manny Ramirez. According to the Globe's Nick Cafardo, Manny Ramirez may be a cheaper alternative to free agents like Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee: "Ramírez has two years left on his contract at $38 million. (The team then has a two-year option.) That might be less than what Soriano will get. With several teams boosted by new revenues, Ramírez might be more viable than he was last year at this time. But one thing hasn't changed: The Red Sox won't give Ramírez away, following the same plan as last offseason, and they need someone to hit behind David Ortiz. Ramírez's agent, Greg Genske, was at the GM meetings and had discussions with Epstein about Ramírez and another of his clients, free agent closer Danys Baez... Ramírez has 10-5 status (10 years in the big leagues and five years with one team), which allows him to veto trades." Ramirez has recently returned from his home in Brazil and has started his offseason workout program in the Ft. Lauderdale area, according to his agent Greg Genske. But when asked whether Ramirez still wanted to be traded, Genske, who was close to departing from the GM meetings said, "There's nothing to say. There's no news." Genske gave several other non-answers concerning whether Ramirez had officially asked for a trade, whether he was still happy in Boston, and whether he thought Ramirez will be moved. "Sorry, but there's absolutely no news on Manny," said Genske, who said he's talked to Ramirez several times this offseason and hoped to go visit him while in Florida. Theo Epstein told SI.com at the GM meetings, "We're keeping all options open, and we'll see what's out there... It would take a really creative deal'' to move Ramirez. In a chat on Boston.com on Thursday, the Globe's Gordon Edes discuss whether he thought Manny is attractive trade bait: "The remaining $40m on Manny's deal is not a deal-breaker, not in today's market, and Omar Minaya, the GM of the Mets, has long been fascinated with Manny and is in the market for a corner outfielder. GM Pat Gillick's remarks about the Phillies not wanting to take on a headache in Manny reflects the reluctance some teams will have about the guy, but as Manny's defenders never tire of saying -- with justification -- look at the numbers. I do think that the teams that miss out on Soriano will take a look at Manny as an alternative."

lol...Michael Young AND Mark Teixiera for Manny? If I were Texas I wouldn't deal either of them straight up for Manny.

I'd have to agree. From an offensive standpoint....Manny Ramirez is much more potent than either Texiera or Michael Young but both Texas boys are very good with the glove. They are both younger than Manny as well. It would be a tough choice between the two but I would have to stick with Texiera. As much as I love Michael Young as a baseball player...Texiera would ease the pain more when losing a player such as Manny Ramirez. I would gladly take either player in a deal.

Id say the Rangers would be more willing to deal Michael Young, who is entering his contract year in 2007

--The Red Sox gain a shortstop in his prime who tallies 200+ hits seasons

--The Red Sox lose one of the best hitters ever to wear the Red Sox uniform, and will need to compensate the void to protect Ortiz

Is there still talk of sending Crisp to Atlanta with prospects in hopes of landing Andruw Jones? I know at the deadline they wanted Coco, Lester, and Hansen...I guess Lester's out now, but maybe they could put something else together? That's another scenario which, if it was to happen, it could be possible to move Manny in a deal without a huge masher included in return. I'd love to see Andruw in CF at Fenway.

I'd like to see they get Michael Young for Manny. The revolving door infield has to stop from my perspective. That's why I am convinced that Dustin Pedroia HAS to be the starting second from the day spring training starts.

Manny isn't going anywhere, because there just isnt that "no brainer" trade out there. Maybe both Young and Tex. Both are coming to the end of contracts tho, so that be alot of money we would have to pay them to stick around. I was reading an article about Tex being shopped awhile back because he is said to want a long term deal in the 100 million range. So I just don't see it happening. We all know how Manny is. He is always like this at the end of the season, he will go to his home and recharge his batteries and be all smiles come spring training and will be ready to go. MLB.com has an interview with his agent, and even his agent said theres no news from Manny saying he wants to be traded. Besides he's a 10-5 guy and if you where even able to get a good deal together he still has the power to veto it. So odds are it will be Manny being Manny in LF next season, and the one after that, and probably if he is still producing, the two option years after that. Which to me is great.

I'm also tired of seeing the revolving door at SS and 2B. I do think Pedroia willbe handed the job this spring for good unless he is a total flop. SS is tricky. Lugo is really the only one left out there FA wise. Maybe they might get a young SS threw trade but i'm not really sure who is available or who is in our farm system. Lugo would be nice for a few seasons. Maybe that would give them time to find a young SS to groom for the job.

As far as A. Jones playing CF. That be nice but he is a FA next year. I would rather them not send a bunch of prospects to ATL for a rental player. If they trade for a CF, say just for argument sake, V. Wells or Jones they better have a contract extension waiting for them to sign when the get to the ballpark. Yes I do realize there both unlikely, especially Wells unless there was another team involved, because I don't see TOR trading there best everyday player to us.

Haha did you even watch games last season. If you trade Manny for Young straight up that would be a horrible trade. You cant replace Manny's production, why cant people realize the Red Sox are just better off keeping Manny and building their team around the best 3-4 combo in the last 60 years.

Not that it's going to happen (I pretty much agree with bosoxnation07), but what about this: deal Manny to Texas for Teixeira and, say, C.J. Young (lefty, good k/9, young). Slide Youk over to third and try to deal Lowell to the Pads for Linebrink and a prospect. Make a strong run at Lugo and Drew, and you've got:

Lugo

Youk

Tex/Drew

Ortiz

Drew/Tex

Tek

WMP

Crisp

Pedroia

Not a lineup of mashers, for sure, but not too bad. With the rotation of Schill, Beckett, Matsuzaka, paps, and Wake, and the additions of Young and Linebrink to the pen, they should be a good pitching and defense club.

Not that any of that is going to happen, mind you.

SD already has there 3B of the future. They got it in the Barfield Guardians trade( his name evades me at this point). So don't expect Lowell to be part of any kind of deal we do with SD. If there even is one to be done.

That doesn't necessarily win you a championship. I'm more interested in building a complete lineup. To the point where everyone in the lineup is a threat. Michael Young is a threat at the plate. He is also a tremendous fielder. Maybe you can't replace Manny's bat in full.....but by adding another power hitter who may be slightly behind AND adding a superior SS would make for a good trade. In the end I think we are blowing smoke.....I still don't see a Manny trade happening.

Does anyone have ESPN Insider? Under the "Rumor Central" tab on ESPN's front page, there's something specific about who's interested in Manny and what's going on behind the scenes. I know we hear the same thing every year, but would it be possible for someone to PM the article to me or something, or post it maybe? Regardless of the circumstances, I'm interested in what it says.

I think the Angels are interested. Why don't we ask for Vlad in return? I wouldn't mind that...

But, if we don't ask for Vlad in return, could you imagine Vlad and Manny in the same outfield? Holy hell...

Nov 21 - The Cubs' signing of Alfonso Soriano has intensified trade rumors swirling around Manny Ramirez, the Boston Herald reports.

The Angels could be a possible suitor. According to the Boston Globe, the Halos might have positioned themselves for a possible trade by signing free agent setup man Justin Speier, freeing setup man Scot Shields in a possible package deal that also could include a starting pitcher, Ervin Santana, or a top prospect such as Brandon Wood.

The Rangers also are talking about a deal for Ramirez, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reports. Texas is looking for a bat to help bolster its lineup, in an offseason in which they might lose Carlos Lee, Mark DeRosa and Gary Matthews Jr.

What if we moved Manny and someone else (Hansen?) to the Angels for Shields, Santana and Wood

Then moved Wood and Santana in a package to get Tejada?

1. Crisp

2. Youk

3. Ortiz

4. Tejada

5. Drew

6. Willy Mo

7. Lowell

8. Varitek

9. Pedroia

and it gives a very solid option for a closer in Shields

thats really the only way i can see a Manny trade happening

I have been away for a little bit, but I have kept in touch with the rumor mill. The latest "credible" rumor was about a three way deal. Now what I deem credible is something that in my mind I can see happening. If I hear a rumor about the sox offering Alex Cora for Albert Pujols, I wont post it because that is just a dumb rumor. So is the rumor of the Rangers dealing Young and Tex who both have a higher worth than Manny for Manny. Here is what I heard.

The three way deal would be with the sox, rangers, and rockies. The rockies would be sent prospects from both Texas and Boston. The Red Sox would get Todd Helton and Akinori Otsuka. The Rangers would get Manny. That sounds like a credible rumor, because the sox really need a 1b and a closer and both of those guys fit the bill well. The left field spot opens for Wily Mo and the RF spot opens for JD Drew. The rockies are trying to get out from under the 4yrs and 17 mi per that Helton has gotten. And the Rangers have a plethora of young bullpen arms that can get the job done as closer, yet they really need a right handed power bat to replace Carlos Lee. ESPN seems to love to run interesting stories, but think before you post a rumor. Some are just dumb.

ESPN insider was free to view this weekend, and all it said was the Sox where trying to get Texas owner warm to the idea of a manny trade again. Mark Texiera would be an excellent pick up but the only problem is hes gonna be a FA soon either after 07 or 08 and wants a 100 million dollar deal. As the spending has gone this winter so far he might just get more! TEX would be a great addition to the lineup, switch hitting power guy is nice. He´s not as proven as Manny tho so if he was to come to BOS I see him hitting 3rd with Papi hitting 4th. But if you take away Manny, there just gonna walk Papi everytime a big situation comes up. If you take away Manny your not only losing Manny´s number but your cutting down Papi´s too. Papi is an elite hitter with Manny, without Manny he will lead the league with walks.

And getting Tejada is dumb. He´s a DH waiting to happen. His range is about half of what it was in OAK.

Manny along Pujols are the best right handed hitters in the game for some times and a sure HALL OF Famer, but if traded will never bring back the same value. I don't believe that the Rangers will do a 2 for one trade (Manny for Young and Texeira) but will they Manny, Youkilis and a middle tier minor league pitcher for Young and Texeira?

I actually think that if Manny is going to be traded, it will be this off-season. I think that with Boras representing both Drew and Matsuzaka, I would not be surprised if Manny is traded to the Mets [could it get any worse for this Yankee fan?]. A package centering on Heilman and Milledge and possibly Pelfry to get Manny, with a window for the Mets to sign Manny to an extension. The Red Sox counter with signing Drew to take over for Manny, and then sign Matsuzaka. Milledge becomes the new left fielder.

The Red Sox cut some salary, ensure signing Matsuzaka and Drew, and get a little younger. They lose some production from the plate, but with Papelbon going to the rotation, Heilman becomes your closer. I think the deal helps the Red Sox. For the Mets, they have a plethora of young arms, especially in the bullpen, Manny will be thrilled to come to New York, and they will have the most dangerous 3-4-5-6 in Beltran-Ramirez-Delgado-Wright in the majors.

I am curious..do you think the scenario I painted makes the Sox a better team or worse?
