While I don't have nearly the grasp to project every position, I was expecting Bard to make his professional debut in this league. I'm guessing you left him off because you believe he starts in Greenville, is this true? Is that also where you believe Doubront starts the season?

I don't know personally, but I do know that a rotation of Bowden, Masterson and Bard would be pretty nasty if they pitch together.

I don't think the Sox want to start Bard off in the California League. My guess is he will pitch the first month or 2 in the SAL for Greenville then move up.

That is an absolutely terrifying lineup on paper. Scaff, I really like Khoury's makeup. Is he settling into "Utility or Bust" territory already, or he just behind Negron in the pecking order?

Yikes, Portland.....with the exception of Cox and Buchholz that lineup features a lot of tweeners and longshots, at this point. I'd think it's do or die time for Bladergroen and Pinckney, wouldn't you say? Neither of them lit it up last year in Wilmington.

For myself, I'm hope to be pleasantly surprised by the middle IF, and to continue to be surprised by Jay Johnson. He really came strong last year - I wonder if he's a guy with sneaky late power. Seems to have an advanced approach.

Posted
Yeah, the MIF is intriguing. I'd like to see Lowrie bounce back after a disappointing year that included some injury time. Natale can handle the wood, but I hope he makes serious strides with the glove.
Posted
Portland's talent its the weaker link in the system, however there some player that may finally put it all together like Bladergroen, Arias and Pinkney. Lowrie again will play out of position as his future its second base, but because of Natale he will remain at SS for now. The pitching beisides top prospects Buckholz and Cox it has some holes, but let see how Hottovy, Bobies and Goodson handles pitching in AA and Vaquedano out of the pen where his sinker may work better than as a starter.

I just recentley read at Baseball America that a scout isn't worried about Lowrie's down year. He still thinks Lowrie has more upside then Pedroia. I'm gonna have to disagree with him there (about the Pedroia thing), but I wouldn't be shocked to see Lowrie have a big rebound year next year.

I think Lowrie could have a big year as well and they may start him in Lancaster to build his confidence back up in the hitter friendly California League.

Scaff, maybe MLFAs deserve another thread, but I have some questions on who will fill these holes. What is the competition for MLFAs? Is it first-come first-served or is there more negotiation team vs. team?

Is Vic Buttler worth signing? Between he and Ellsbury that would make for a speedy OF. Finish it off with Tydus Meadows or Restovich perhaps, if available. What about Enrique Cruz for short - he's only 25, can he improve defensively? And is Gary Burnham the new Morgan Burkhart?

Sorry, lot of questions for one post.

Boxsox; let me try to answer your questions, Minor league free agents normally are looking for two things, one is for an organization that will place them on their own 40 man roster, a Spring training ML invitation or a good opportunity to make the ML roster and the other one is an organization that offers the best financial deal. I really haven't spend much time this off season to find out who are the best minor league free agents are.

From the names that you mentioned Mike Restovich is by far the best prospect and one worthed to sign, in 2006 the 6-4 240 who will be 28 yrs in the early part of the new year hit for a 293 ave in AAA with 29 doubles and 27 HR, but 121 strike outs and 51 BB. You're correct Burnhan and Burkhardt are very similar players, non athletic, who's only tool that they can hit. Sorry but neither Butler, Meadows or Enrique Cruz does much for my interest.

Is Kevin Witt a MLFA this year? He'd be a good Petagine type stash down in the Buckett just in case the injury bug bit again.

I've got a personal connection there. He lived next to my grandmother in Jax Beach, so when I came down to visit, I used to whip his ass in basketball. His brothers were professional tennis players.

He's not an MLFA ORS. List is here.

Thanks for answering my questions Scaff. Just to clarify - I was thinking it would be good for the Sox to try to make Pawtucket a playoff-caliber team, so the true prospects would have some experience in a pennant race. I don't think any of guys listed has a chance with the Sox to get put on the 40-man - but I think they're good AAA-AAAA players who would help accomplish that goal.

But, from what you've said about MLFAs, I would guess they would not want to sign in the Boston organization since they'd be such longshots. Do all AAAA players look to catch on in the Kansas City, Washington and Florida organizations? (I'm somewhat kidding, but it also makes some sense)

Interesting. Travis Beazley pitched 67.2 innings last year, and the peripherals weren't bad. The DIPS was average. He got taken yard a bit more than you'd like to see in A ball but still, he appeared to be fairly effective. Why is he being sent to XST? Same goes for Large who performed well in every statistical category. Is this just based on stuff, or are there particular things they are working on with these guys (new pitch, mechanics)?
Posted
Why wouldn't still go to Lowell? Would he advance past there after extended spring training?

Still would go to Lowell but you have to remember Lowell is a short season team and he can remain in XST for the time before that. Still didn't do anything to warrant any promotion.

The group of players posted above aren't likely returning to Lowell, but won't break out of Spring training with a full scheduled team unless there are injuries on those, also the organization will be pulling players out of this group when there is a need to replace injured players from full scheduled teams.

Steinocher, Lawson and Beasly where very good college pitchers with very average stuff that's why they where drafted in the second day of the drat and all of them have a limeted potential. Large on the other hand has better stuff, but is very inconsistent and with a health history and in addition will be 24 yrs early in the minor league season. the two sleepers from that group is Rhoades and Guillen. There where reports of Rhoades throwing in the mid 90's with Greenville in 06 but his numbers didn't translate to that kind of stuff in addition he is a small RHP. Guillen has good size at 6-3 170 and a fast ball around 92-93 and had a good season in Lowell (first in US) but he will be 23 yrs before Spring training will open.
