No doubt, both the Red Sox and Yankees had very disappointing seasons.

The Red Sox had a great start and through a combination of injuries, cold bats and piss-poor pitching, collapsed in the second half finishing in double-digit games behind the Yankees.

The Yankees rolled pretty much the entire season overcoming injuries but having the luxury of being able to get a Bobby Abreu as an injury replacement to their outfield. But they took arguably the best hitting lineup in baseball history, scored 14 runs in 4 games and endured another playoff flameout has given rise to criticism from all sides that hasn't been seen in awhile (perhaps since the 2004 Yankees).

So the question is, is it easier to be a Red Sox or a Yankees fan right now?

It really is easier to be a Yankee fan no matter the situation, however, most Yankee fans are fairweatehred (unlike those on our site) and have quickly hidden their caps, Sox fans you have to endure the pain so they end to be more true fanbase wise. However, fi you knew nothing about baseball, and had to choose based on who had the more championships and money, you'd choose the yanks most of the time.

on the surface...easier to be a Yanks fan, as those who can count as high as 26 can throw around their "26-6" comments and such....but...

I have a hunch that buried beneath their proud exterior burn issues that are masked by their allegiance to baseball's richest team and that the truth is front-running somehow dorsn't compensate for these issues...so...

in the end its easier to be a Sox fan, not because of the Sox themselves, just because the fact that Sox fans are true, are better balanced and more comfortable in their skin and this is why they were able to grow attached to a TEAM...rather than an ICON.

So much easier to be a yankees fan. Yankees fans know that Cashman and George are going to address their shortcomings in order to make another run next year. Can sox fans really say "In Theo We Trust?" right now? I can't. I can't say Theo is going to get us Speier or another bat, or another starter. I don't know. I know George is gonna get a frontline starter and probably a bat. I know that.

Easier to be a yanks fan.

I'd say its easier to be a Yankees fan..if you live in a Yankee fan area, I mean, I bet its easier to be a Sox fan in Boston lol. I still have yet to have any Yankee fans I know to even talk to me about baseball since Yanks have been kicked out, so when your in this atmosphere..itll be easier since their as you say..showin up in A's hats:thumbdown

See, I kind of like being a Sox fan. Sure, I'd love more championships and what not, but I think, that being a Sox fan identifies more people than being a Yankee fan. Like, throughout my entire group of friends, I'm the Sox fan. Everyone knows me as such. Even all of my friends parents know me as a Sox fan. Whenever something happens with the Sox, they always talk to me about it. It's cool to be associated with something. Yankee fans are a dime a dozen around these parts (Syracuse, NY) so it's sweet being in the minority. Call me crazy.

I'd say a Sox fan. We recently won our first World Series in 86 years and we're not expected to win the World Series every year. It gets a lot more pub when NY loses then when we do.

I grew up in the DC area, and the "home" team was the O's. Dad and grandpa were Sox fans, so the region didn't matter to me. The Sox were the team I grew up rooting for. A lot of people are like this. If you do leave the area, and your kids grow up supporting your teams, would you fault them for not sticking with the local team?

I have to agree with pudge here. The Sox definitely chose me. I didn't choose them. However, I am eternally grateful that they did.

To answer the original question, though, I would say that it is easier to be a Sox fan. Despite 2004, people have their opinions on what the Sox will do. They'll come out of gates strong, fall into their mid-season rut in July-August and then come back with some spark during the last few weeks. Sometimes that last ditch effort is enough to put us in the post season. But in the end, people expect us to lose. Anything more than that is pure icing, but anything less doesn't matter... because that's the Sox we've grown to love and we're sticking with them. We had our share of bandwagoners after 04 but the core of Sox nation has always remained, and always will.

Eh I think that can go both ways when you have shown that you really are a true fan of your team. There are plenty of Yankee fans back home but I was always known as the Yankee fan. Here in Boston I'm known as the Yankee fan too, and there are a surprising amount of Yankee fans up here.

I think it's easier to be a Sox fan. Yankee fans always expect to win and don't really accept anything less than winning. I know my generation of Yankee fans has yet to see the Yanks miss the play offs. When they finally do finish second and miss the WC berth, I'd hate to see the reactions. Sox fans kind of have that inferiority complex, they are always second best to "the most storied franchise in all of sports" and they get to always cheer for the underdog, which IMO is always easier. They expect to lose, and then when they do it doesn't hurt as much. When they win, it feels completely exciting instead of half exciting half relief. Now I realize that that is going by stereotypes and things have somewhat changed since 2004, but I still think in the grand scheme of things if the Sox don't win another WS soon and create some sort of winning pattern there will still be the mindset of the superier Yankees in Sox fans minds. I took a rather simple idea and made it into a full fledged paragraph partly because I think I'm right and partly because I am procrastinating hardcore. So please, feel free to disagree so I am occupied by something other than Astronomy, Italian and History.

Yankees fan not only do they have 26 World Series Titles but they haven't missed the playoffs in like what more than 9 years. When you are a Yankees fan your team seems to make it into the playoffs every year no matter how they do it they always find a way.

The sox have been competitive pretty much from the late 70's. They have finished with a record over .500 27 of the last 33 seasons. That's not to say they DID win all of those years (obviously they didn't) but they fielded teams that were somewhat in the chase and which won more games than it lost. There were always better teams, but every generation a Sox team comes about that seems to have a shot. I think the sox have tended to have considerable success against just about everyone OTHER than the Yankees.

Crazy is what it takes to be a Red Sox fans but in my opinion it shouldn't be any other way. I still proudly wear my Red Sox Jacket, hat, tee shirts, watch and wallet and I want everyone to know that come hell or high water I love the Bosox. You know what? I sure haven't seen any Yankee hats around since they got bombed out of the playoffs. I think many Yankee fans are fair weather ones that jump off the bandwagon when things go astray. I don't think they can say that about us.:D :D :D
