From Boston.com

Alex Gonzalez left Boston and the team last night not long after 6 p.m., the reason he was replaced in the lineup by Alex Cora. Gonzalez was called away because of an issue with his wife, and headed down to Miami to be with his family last night. Manager Terry Francona said Gonzalez is not expected to come back, and doesn't need to come back.

^Yeah' date=' Beckett had great stuff through 5 innings.[/quote']

Rather the first 6. Regardless he was backed by a pitiful offense (except Ortiz) who cant hit worth their weight. 8 shutouts to them this season, what like 2 all of last season? They have been one of the worst hitting teams in September, I wont be surprised if they rank among dead last.

He was also backed by a manager who has been circa Grady Little this entire season by leaving his starters in for too long

beckett had the worst 16 win season ive ever seen

hes got 6 months to get some command on his breaking ball and develop an offspeed pitch or this will be the worst money we spent since the mike lansing dante bichette years

Maybe you are overstating the case just a bit?

overstating??

maybe

but

after giving up the rookie of the year in hanley ramirez and evidently a solid starter in annie sanchez who has a no hittter and several great starts in his rookie season then reupping becks for a few more years depsite him being a human launching pad ....

i dont think im not too far off

am i??

36 HRs is nothing to be proud of but he really cut down on the gopher ball toward the end. In his last 10 starts, he only gave up 5 HRs. Ironically, he gave up the bulk of the HRs when he was chalking up wins and the team was doing well. HRs don't matter if you win. Conversely, it doesn't matter if you are not giving up HRs, but you are losing. If Sanchez turns out to be great, that doesn't mean that Beckett is a bad pitcher to have in a rotation. Barring injury, he should be a productive starter for many years. If Sanchez turns out to be great, it shows me that the FO traded the wrong prospect. They would have been better off trading Lester. His cancer aside. He did not demonstrate consistent command to be in the ML rotation. Maybe he was affected by his condition. I don't know. Certainly, they could have turned Fla in a different direction if they thought Sanchez was the jewel. If they did, then the Sox would have had both Beckett and Sanchez in the rotation at the end of the year.

i bet wakefield against detroit a couple years ago and he gave up 7?hrs and got the win i think...

agreed,hr totas are meaningless when you win

problem i had with becks this year was he sucked against toronto and ny

and i mean flat out sucked

cant be an ace in the al east if you cant stay in the games against ny and toronto

i do think he'll be better next year

i think hes thrown his breaking balls for strikes more in the 2nd half of the season

he still needs to develop a change up to go with his power to be a real stud

Beckett before this game had gone on a nice little hot streak for a month and was performing like an ace. He also has done something with his mechanics, as the HR hasnt hurt him as much as it did in 1st half.

Beckett's 2nd Half stats (excluding outings vs Oakland @ Fenway, Cleveland, New York @ Fenway, & Tampa)

5-3, 3.13 ERA (12 starts)

72 innings, 57 Hits, 26 Runs (25 ER) 3 HRs, 24 Walks, 50 Ks

i saw him lose twice in a week to the tigers and the yanks when we still had a chance

he was horrid

that yankee game on a the saturday afternoon he had 9bbs and 9 earned

thru 4? i think

leaving a baseball game early is like leaving church before confession

you just dont do it

by the 7th inning i was in a taxi headed for brookline and i left those table seats in right field above the #42 where each table had a 100.00 vouture for food and beer??

a man of my calibre leaving food and beer on the table??

ya

it was that disgraceful of a performance

good thing is hes not a whiner or a cry baby and i think another year of schilling tutoring him on his work ethic and command of the game will help him be what we all know he can be

a consistant 18-20 game winner with an era 2 runs better than he has now

About him having less wins in the 2nd half compared to the 1st half.... is well due more to the fact of the Sox lineup being beat up the way it is. He has had his fair share of quality starts with nothing to show for them.

So him losing those 2 games in August really would have increased chances of Sox making the playoffs? That I just dont agree with. The 06 Yankees & Twins are above & beyond what this current Sox team is, those 2 games being won would have made no difference except for a lead in 2nd place over the Blue Jays.
