Jarvis set for Red Sox debut

Toronto (69-66) at Boston (73-62), 1:05 p.m. ET

By Mike Petraglia / Special to MLB.com

With Tropical Storm Ernesto bearing down on the Northeast, the Red Sox and Blue Jays have moved up their Saturday game to 1:05 p.m. ET.

And the Red Sox can only hope that the torrent of medical issues will have subsided by the time the first pitch is thrown by Red Sox newcomer Kevin Jarvis.

Following Friday night's 2-1 win over Toronto, it was announced that Curt Schilling will miss his Monday start with a Grade 1 strain of his right latissimus. Boston also announced that Jonathan Papelbon will have his strained right shoulder examined.

"It's our job," Kevin Youkilis said after the latest batch of injury news Friday. "Our job is to play baseball. You've got to go out there and do your job, plain and simple. You can't cry, 'Boo-hoo, we don't have our starters in.' You can't do much about it, but you can't cry about it. You just play hard, because anyone can win in this game. That's why the bottom teams beat the best teams in the game. It's baseball. Crazy things can happen. Hell, just look at RSR, he's 17-3 in the Talksox.com gamethread for Christ sake."

Jarvis, obtained Thursday from Arizona, is a 37-year-old right-hander who will be making his 116th Major League start, compiling a 33-44 mark with four complete games. This will be his first career appearance against Toronto since 1997.

Toronto sends right-hander A.J. Burnett to the mound as the Red Sox look for their third straight win in the four-game weekend series.

Pitching Matchup

TOR: RHP A.J. Burnett (6-6, 4.53 ERA)

Burnett pitched through rainy conditions in his last start, giving up six runs on 10 hits in seven innings against Cleveland on Aug. 28. The right-hander wouldn't blame the conditions on the ineffectiveness of his pitches, though. His four-seam fastball was up in the zone and his two-seamer failed to sink, helping the Guardians connect on seven extra-base hits against Burnett. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak in which Burnett posted a 3.04 ERA. The righty's only career start against Boston came on April 21, when he left the game after four innings due to an elbow injury that led to a two-month stay on the disabled list.

BOS: RHP Kevin Jarvis (0-1, 11.91 ERA)

The 37-year-old right-hander makes his Boston debut just two days after being acquired from Arizona for a player to be named later. This season, he made one start for the Diamondbacks and four relief appearances between June 4-17 before being designated for assignment on June 19. In his only start, he allowed eight runs and nine hits against Texas over five innings and took the loss in Arizona's 8-4 loss at Texas on June 17.

Player to watch

Eric Hinske has hit safely in five straight games, going 6-for-16 (.375) with two doubles, two RBIs and a run to break out of a 1-for-21 slump in his previous nine games.

Good thing I have tickets to today's game and I am seeing Kevin Jarvis. It will be a long day.
This is the worst starting rotation of the Red Sox that I can remember. Seriously, if you look at the '92 roster (the worst Sox team since '66), the pitching rotation on that team was much better.:(

Curt Schilling (will miss start, Lenny DiNardo will fill in vs the White Sox)

Josh Beckett

Kyle Snyder

Kason Gabbard

Kevin Jarvis

Wakefield keeps getting pushed back, they might as well shut him down for the rest of the season.

There's no reason to shut down Wakefield. I am sure he wants to come back.

they keep pushing him back, now im hearing (WEEI) that there is no timetable because his back is still bothering him.

EDIT: Never thought Id hear this

On Nesn has Jerry Remy saying that he sees Kyle Snyder as the 5th starter of the rotation next year

Yeah, gotta agree. I took a liking to crisps bat he hit around .300 his first two seasons in the bigs, he is a good hitter but his defense is atrocious. We have two left fielders in the outfield every night. Crisp just doesn't have the range to get it done in center.

How well does WMP play center field ?

He had a good read on the ball playing in absence of Coco but I think thew organization believes he could be manning right field as the starter in 2007.

Coco's defense has really turned me off, how many extra base hits will he give away? I heard he has a good read on balls, but... (excluding several great catches) its been a bad scene

Top free agent choices would be Matthews or Hunter (Twins are said to probably buy out his option year), but then have to think the Sox will just need a stop-gap center fielder with Ellsbury charging through the minor lerague system
