Who do you think well get if anyone?

We are getting catcher George Kottaras. That's pretty much a definite. He has to be the PTBNL as he is on the Padres 40 man roster and would not clear waivers. He is the Padres #2 prospect coming into the season by Baseball America.

I agree, it wouldn't make sense to be anybody else.

If it is Kottaras, this a f***ing coup, a coup I tell you. We just traded 5-6 starts to fill the biggest hole in the minors with a prospect worth getting excited about. Although, they owed us after raping us for for Bard/Meredith for Mirabelli.

When I heard that 9 teams were inquiring, I figured that they had a chance of getting a good prospect. It's a good deal for the Red Sox and if he wins some key games down the stretch and in the playoffs, it could be worth it for the Padres.

oooo my god Cla Merideth has an era of less than 1

holy s***

(didnt notice it until now)

but i guess its cuz hes in one of the weakest divisions in baseball

What was the reason for this trade? It's not like we have an abundance of starting pitching right now

The front office realizes that this season is over, so instead of watching Wells retire at the end of the season without getting anything in return, it made sense to get what we could from a contender. Basically, we got something for Wells as opposed to nothing if he stayed.

Seriously? You don't know why a team that has no chance to make the playoffs just traded a solid starting pitcher who is going to retire at the end of the year and not contribute anything to the club in the future for one of the top 5 rated catching prospects in all of baseball when we don't have any legit catching prospects in AA or AAA???

It would be funny if he doesn't retire.

Well, I'm sure he would if he finished in Boston. I wouldn't be surprised to see him give it one more year since he's back in San Diego, especially since he's pitching very well again.

Even if he doesn't retire he wasn't coming back to boston. He asked to be traded at the beggining of the season.

All in all this was a good deal for the sox who were going nowhere. I can't believe people are actually questioning trading wells.
One poster with 13 posts asking why is not very significant dissent.

I find the only thing worse than the Red Sox's recent skid is their fanbase of suicidal followers.

I see. I figured Wells would finish off his career in Boston since the people here love him. Trading him seemed like the ultimate white flag. A lot of people have already given up on the season, but I haven't. I understand the trade from the standpoint that it was designed to benefit Wells..other than that, trading 1/3 of the Red Sox's remaining healthy and solid starters seemed asinine.

Was this directed at me? Your belief that baseball IQ is proportional to one's posts is unbelievable.

I was just pointing out that we were not seeing a lot of dissent on the boards. Don't take it so personally.

I can appreciate your "never say die" mentality, but that doesn't make it right. This team is brutally flawed. 28 left to play and 6.5 out of the WC? They'd have to go 21-7......and still hope both the CWS and Twins played .500 or worse ball. Possible? Yes. Likely? Not in a million years, even with Wells.

I know it's unlikely, but so was breaking an 86 year 'curse'. As Red Sox fans, we should show more faith than any other team's fans!

maybe you should give up on the season

NEVER!

Oh, sorry.

If we finish the season 2-4 games behind the Yankees, then EVERYONE will be questioning this trade. Boomer was, at the time he was traded, our best starter, and we may have just turned several future victories into losses.

But if our precipitious decline following Varitek's injury proved anything, it's that we desperately need good catchers. So Epstein et al. were in a difficult position. Only once the season is finished will anyone have a reasonable opinion on whether this was a good move.

Newsflash the sox are unlikely to finish 2-4 games behind the yankees with a bad bullpen and no starters after schilling and beckett. this team can't go on a prolong winning streak.

agreed, and the Fo has to play it based on probabilities.

Taking it a step further...even if they somehow managed to make the playoffs, is this team really going anywhere?

IMO, it would have been better to have tanked in June and July, then become sellers at the trading deadline...that glimmer of hope sort of put a kabosh on the teams ability to make a splash at the trade deadline.
