The Dodgers who were floundering before the trading deadline and looked dead have been rivived by FO moves to get Maddux, Bettemit, and Lugo. They have run off 10 wins in a row and picked up 7 games in the Wild Card race which they trail by only 1/2 game and they picked up 6 games on SD to trail the division by only 1 game. Somehow they were able to make these moves without mortgaging their future. How'd they do that?

Edit: They are ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th in theirbid for 11 in a row.

We might be watching Nomar, Pedro, Lowe and Damon in the Playoffs.

They gave up nothing to get Maddux. (Maddux would not have agreed to come to the AL in my mind) and they acquired Lugo for Joel Guzman who in scouts books is a very good prospect but in my eyes is expendable and overrated and Betimit cost them Baez. The Drays would have obviously overcharged the red sox more since they are in the division and they weren't too happy when they heard the sox contacting lugo's agent. The Dodgers farm system is also significantly better than the Red Sox.

I felt like this team was going to break out, too much talent, if they could stay healthy (Gagne, Nomar), with the acquisitions of Maddux and Lugo, this team is going to win the West. You know what I would love to see? The Reds win the central and the Cards the WC, so the Mets and Cards meet in the 1st round, meaning one of those teams vs. Reds/Dodgers in the NLCS. Good NL playoffs, but a shitload better talent in the AL. We could have both WS teams miss the playoffs this year.

I am always reading about the great farm system that we have that it is stocked with young talent, but when other teams make moves I'm informed that they could part with their prospects because they have a much better farm system. Do we have a really good, deep farm system or not? Where does it rank with other teams?

Well after trading 3 of our top 10 prospects in the offseason the system took a hit and promoting Lester, Delcarmen, Hansen and Papelbon fulltime and the system is very thin at the top making things very difficult to get talent in trades. The Sox system still has a lot of good talent and with this years draft they did reload that talent. As everyone knows the 2 best prospects right now are Pedroia who will be the starting 2B next year and Ellsbury who will likely finish 2007 in AAA. After that there is not much else in AA or AAA but the rest of the talent is going to be at high A ball next year. The sox were ranked 7th before the season by BA but thats before the Marte trade to cleveland. The Dodgers were ranked the #1 farm system by BA. The sox will likely be in the teens after this season after having a bunch of prospects graduate.

The Dodgers farm system is outstanding. The reason they've been able to be so close is because of some of those players. Broxton, Either, Martin, Repko, Billingsey, and Kemp all have helped the Dodgers get into first place.

They were able to plug the holes they had using the prospects they didn't need. They don't even need to resign Garciaparra, Lugo, or Kent. They can plug in LaRoche, Betemit, and Loney at the respective IF positions.

The Red Sox have a good farm system, it's just that the Dodgers have either the first or second one in MLB.

Plus, they play in a bad division.

Keep an eye on the Diamondbacks and Dodgers. They know how to build organizations from the ground up.

That's true, the D'backs have quite a few guys at the big league level who came through their farm system. Webb, Tracy, Jackson, Carlos Quentin, and there are more waiting to come up next year.

Don't forget Stephen Drew, Justin Upton and Chris Young.

Lowe too.

But yeah, it'd definetely be more appropriate... but then we'd have to rename all the threads in which he bitches about not resigning Damon and Pedro and it'd get kind of confusing with every f***ing thread having the same title.

was reply from the orel thread? if so, i was actually referring to the darkest day in my life...the day the rocket signed with the pinstripes. toronto i could live with, not ny! :thumbdown , but yeah for the purposes of that argument, pedro and damon work too.

Why didn't you name this thread "Me crying about Damon and Pedro again"?
Thank you for bringing this up, because I was remiss in mentioning that we will probably also be watching Orlando Cabrera in the playoffs-- another aging declining player.

Kent is signed for next year with an option in 2008 which Colletti is certainly going to honor. That means the Dodgers have a surplus third baseman in Andy LaRoche who I think just might be the odd man out in that organization. I think it would be terrific if the Red Sox could put together a trade to get that young man to Boston. The Dodgers still have Betemit and he should be good for a number of years. As for our farm system we have some guys like Mark Wagner, Jed Lowrie and Jeff Natale who are in "A" ball and project as good prospects.

E-z, I was at Angels Stadium today and saw for a moment Damon and Cabrera talking to each other at second base after JD doubled to open the game. I was trying to think what they were talking about, like "how about those stupid Red Sox letting us get away." At that moment I had a real hard on for Theo for his stupidity in getting rid of these players and picking up some inferior talent to take their places. That is partly why we are in the outhouse today.

700, I've been rooting for the Dodgers this year for the first time since they left Brooklyn and it looks like I will be taking in many of their games as the season wears down. It is obvious the Red Sox aren't going anywhere, but the Dodgers have been a very hot or very cold team and it is hard to project where they are going to finish. If they play the way they're capable they should start pulling away from the division, but everytime they see a Padres uniform they get a case of the shakes----and they haven't been too swift against Arizona or Colorado either. They could still play better than they have.

Unlikely. I doubt they win the WC, and they a bit of a gap to make up in the West.

The Dodgers have gotten alot better that's for sure and they made some steals in getting Maddux and Lugo but I have to disagree with them being the team to beat in the N.L I still think the New York Mets are the team to beat over in the National League and they are my pick to be the N.L Champ this year.

The Dodgers lead the season series against those two (8-7 vs. AZ and 10-3 vs. CO). I don't care if the Padres have the Dodgers' numbers, but the team that really worries me is the Giants.
