He would also have to pass threw NL waivers before he can hit AL waivers and it was likely an NL team would claim him. So the Red Sox really would never have had a chance at him.

this is a good deal for the dbacks. Livan has been nasty in his last few starts. Couple that with being added back into a pennant race, and I think he comes out guns blazin. The sox could have used him, but I read somewhere that he was actually claimed by the DBacks, so it never would have gotten to the sox.

I am sure he was available a week ago for about the same price without having to go through waivers. My recollection is that last week we still didn't have a 4th or 5th starter. So, by your posting that the Sox had no chance to get him because of the waiver rules you are acknowledging that the FO blew it at the trading deadline when they could have got him without waivers? Otherwise, I don't get the point of your post.

The point is people shouldn't be pissed that the sox weren't in on it after the deadline because they had no chance as he wasn't going to get through NL waivers.

I agree with your idea, unless the sox got good news on Wake. If they think Wake will be back soon, then going out and getting a guy inked for 8 mil for next yr is not wise. As it is, I think Wake will be out into September, although I have no idea how those things work. If Wake doesn't come back, then not going after Hernandez is the same as giving up the season.

Oh, good point, but I can be pissed that Theo wasn't on this a week ago when we didn't have a 4th or 5h starter?

Ribs take a long time to heal, and they are very painful. Wake isn't close to throwing yet, so who knows how long this will take. Before the deadline, Wells hadn't pitched in a game, so they had no idea what to expect from him. Livan would've filled the 5th slot until Wake comes back, and Wake wouldn't have to rush. After Wake comes back Livan would've been a nice insurance policy if Wells breaks down or just can't pitch effectively, or if something goes wrong with one of the other starters. He would have been very useful. We just don't have enough pitching.

LH is garbage this year. he's pitched well against THREE TEAMS..

ORIOLES

PADRES (small sample size)

GIANTS

STL (small sample siz)

the guy walks more people than a crosswalk cop. i wouldn't let him get near fenway park, let alone our rotation.

But he is hot right now. 5QS in a row with playoff dominance in his blood. He would have been an asset.

The Red Sox likely stayed away since he is signed for 7 million next year. Had he been a free agent this year they might have pursued him more but they likely didn't want him for 2007.

the PLAYOFF greatness is so overrated it's not even funny. i don't know how long it'll take, maybe it'll be never but people need to realize something called sample size.
