Well, the "schillingouttheks" mojo train continues, and starting today it will be accompanied by some "One Red Seat" mojo as well. David Wells will be looking to get back on track tonight after a rough last outing against not the Cleveland Guardians, but Casey Blake himself. There's no reason that the Sox shouldn't be able to sweep this series, and go onto KC to sweep the next. Go Sox!

Ortiz looks for 40th homer as Red Sox meet Devil Rays

Boston (65-43) at Tampa Bay (45-65) 7:15 pm EDT

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- David Ortiz is slowly turning things around in August after a dominant July.

Ortiz can reach the 40-homer mark for the third consecutive season when the Boston Red Sox go for their fourth victory in six games Saturday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

After being named American League Player of the Month for producing 14 homers and 35 RBI in July, Ortiz went hitless in 10 at-bats before belting two solo homers for Boston in Friday's 3-2 win over Tampa Bay.

Manny Ramirez extended his hitting streak to 20 games and Curt Schilling posted his 14th win as the Red Sox stayed one game behind the New York Yankees in the AL East Division race.

David Wells (0-1, 11.08 ERA) makes just his fourth start of the year and second since coming off the disabled list. The veteran lefthander was tagged for eight runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings without getting a decision Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians.

The Devil Rays give the ball to Casey Fossum (5-4, 4.89), who is 2-2 with a 2.86 career ERA against Boston. He yielded one run and six hits in seven frames of Monday's win against the Detroit Tigers.

Carl Crawford hit his 15th homer and Damon Hollins added his 13th for Tampa Bay, which has dropped three of four.

Mojo of the day for David Wells:

David Wells is an enormous man with an enormous talent. Let's hope he can tap into it and be a horse down the stretch. It starts today. Oh, and if Travis Lee is playing and hits another comebacker at him, I will personally find his house and s*** on it.

Here's another enormous man with enormous talent. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole -- Bradah Iz -- R.I.P. He ushers in Hawaiian Mojo.

Have you ever seen anything like this? I hiked there on my honeymoon and took a helo tour of this place, the famous Napali Coast on Kauai.

It’s almost amazing how Papi has carried the team offensively this year, especially over the past month. Now it’s time for other players to step it up and get it done. Let’s get a big fat lead early on and try to get at least 6 out of Boomer.

Ortiz with a rare start at 1st, giving Lowell another day off

Boston.com on some of the injuries

Here's the news of the day from a reporter who's thinking of taking out disability after getting a playful punch in the arm from Wily Mo Pena earlier in the week...

It seems as though Doug Mirabelli won't be out more than three or four days, which is good news for the Red Sox and bad news for Pawtucket's Corky Miller, who was called up today. (Bryan Corey was designated for assignment.) He's walking without a crutch -- which means he's down to one less than Jason Varitek, who's progressing after his surgery earlier this week -- and said he shouldn't miss any more time than he did in 2002 when he had a similar injury. In that case he didn't miss a single Tim Wakefield start.

Meanwhile Mike Lowell had an MRI during the sixth inning yesterday, and has progressed far enough that he can put on a sneaker. Yesterday it was only a slip-on shoe. The MRI showed no fracture, so Lowell is hopeful that it won't be too long before he can be back on the field.

For now, with the two injured active players clogging up the roster, there's a little bit of a strange lineup today, including David Ortiz at first base. Gotta go with what you have.

We'll get you more if we have it later, along with any other injury updates as they happen during the game. Odds are this time it will be a member of the press box crew -- that pesky carpal tunnel syndrome.

So much for the Corey trade

I like those batting numbers against Fossum, and the ones against Wells too. I'm feeling a turnaround with each. I expect a big hitting game by the Sox and a strong outing from Wells.

Pedroia up sooner than expected?

NESN

Tonight the Paw Sox are starting Dustin Pedroia at 3rd base, Gordon Edes indicated it could be insurance in case Mike Lowell goes down on the DL.

Color me interested. I wasn’t expecting to see him up until September but it sounds like it could be much sooner. Meanwhile I'm hoping for the best for Lowell.

ughh...does this mean that the Sox know something we dont about Lowell's injury? I wouldn't be surprised to see Lowell on the DL.

That would be a terrible blow to the lineup.

Lowell's cooled off since early on, maybe an infusion of youth could help right about now.
Maybe he just needs a rest. Playing in 90+ temperatures more than 100 games into the season takes its toll.

Apparently giving up a HR in your first appearance as a Red Sox doesn’t bode well for your future with the team.

Wait, so if he doesn't have the arm strength for SS, why the hell are they even considering him at 3B?

I like this idea more and more. Alex Cora is serviceable at 3B but doesn’t contribute a whole lot offensively. If Lowell is out for any extended length of time (which I hope isn’t the case), I think the added bat that Pedroia brings could be what the Sox sputtering offense needs. If this was May I might think otherwise, but now that we’re in a playoff run we need all the offense possible.
